The Congenitally Dilated Prostatic Utricle

A case of utricular dilatation in a child with recurrent urinary tract infection and associated genitourinary anomalies is presented. The embryology of the utricle and the relationship of the dilated utricle to the müllerian duct regression factor are discussed. Clinical sequelae, diagnosis and management are outlined briefly.

Hair Cells in Mammalian Utricles

Two morphological classes of mechanosensory cells have been described in the vestibular organs of mammals, birds, and reptiles: type I and type II hair cells. Type II hair cells resemble hair cells in other organs in that they receive bouton terminals from primary afferent neurons.

The Prostatic Utricle in the Fetus and Infant

The prostatic utricle (uterus masculinus) has been examined in 194 fetuses and infants, and its appearance before and after birth has been described. The utricle was markedly enlarged in 16 cases and caused extreme bulging of the colliculus seminalis in 5 cases.

A prostatic utricle is a congenital outpouching of the prostatic urethra. Signs, symptoms, and indications for surgical intervention include hematuria, pseudo-incontinence from urine trapping within the utricle, lower urinary tract symptoms, recurrent urinary tract infections, and stone formation within the pouch.
