Atmospheric Evolution and UV-B Radiation

1982
The evolutionary role of ozone has potentially significant implications for the evaluation of the sensitivity of present ecosystems to ultraviolet radiation changes. The literature on the evolution of atmospheric oxygen and ozone is reviewed indicating that current understanding has the oxygen content of the atmosphere near zero until about 2 x 109 ...

Monitoring Surface UV-B Radiation from Space

1994
While the problem of estimating expected global changes in surface UV-B is complex, the UV-B input into the troposphere can be estimated quite accurately because of the high quality record of global ozone measurements from the TOMS instrument on Nimbus 7.

Effects of UV-B Radiation on Photosynthesis

1986
Several component reactions of photosynthesis, and net CO2 assimilation rates have been shown to be detrimentally affected by UV-B radiation levels equal to or above those presently received at various locations on the earth’s surface. Many of these studies, however, were completed under environmental conditions that deviated from ambient field ...

Stratospheric ozone depletion, UV-B radiation and crop disease

Environmental Pollution, 2000
Ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B: 290-315 nm) is expected to increase as the result of stratospheric ozone depletion. Within the environmental range, UV-B effects on host plants appear to be largely a function of photomorphogenic responses, while effects on fungal pathogens may include both photomorphogenesis and damage.

Biological Responses to UV-B Radiation Dosages

1994
The effects of UV as a wide-spread phenomenon in sensitive plants have been identified. These effects result in growth inhibition and formation of UV-absorbing phenylpropanoin and flavonoid pigments. The responses occur with-in the framework of photomorphogenesis and represent protective mechanisms against UV damage.

Effects of UV-B Radiation on Wax Biosynthesis

1994
Two genotypes of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were exposed in controlled environment chambers to three levels of biologically effective ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-BBE; 280-320nm): 0,4.54 (ambient) and 5.66 (≈ 25% enhancement) kJ m-2 d-1. After 28 days, the quantity of wax deposited on leaf surfaces was determined gravimetrically; epicuticular wax ...

Underwater Radiation Measurements: Consequences of an Increased UV-B Radiation

2006
Almost all outdoor living organisms are exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UV). Ecosystems experience from morning to evening a strong variation of UV intensity due to diurnal changes in solar elevation, which depends on latitude and time of the year. These changes are the most dominant factor causing short term variation in UV radiation on Earth.
