It has previously been demonstrated that chronic low-dose solar-simulated ultraviolet (UV) radiation can induce both local and systemic immunosuppression as well as tolerance to a topically applied hapten. Epidermal cells from UV-irradiated mice inhibit spontaneous regression of tumours indicating that UV-induced immunosuppression is likely to permit ...

The effects of UVA on the skin are well documented in the literature. Sunscreens were originally developed to protect against erythema and consequently against UVB. Even today, most sunscreens on the market provide much higher UVB than UVA protection.

Although UVA radiation was considered to be benign as a factor that could contribute to cataract formation, the studies briefly summarized herein show that UVA may provide the more damaging radiant energy involved in the formation of human cataract. Of the UVA impinging onto the eye from sunlight, a sufficient dose does reach into the lens to enhance ...

Comparison of UVA- and UVA/riboflavin-induced growth inhibition of Acanthamoeba Castellanii
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 2012To investigate whether ultraviolet light (UVA) at 365 nm can inhibit/eliminate Acanthamoeba growth and if riboflavin would potentiate such an association.Acanthamoeba castellanii in a fluid medium with a concentration of approximately 1.7 × 10(4) protozoa/ml were prepared with (0.01 %) and without riboflavin.

UVA absorption and photostability of coumarins
Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, 2010Various substituted 4-methylcoumarin derivatives were synthesized in order to obtain photostable derivatives with UVA absorption property. It was found that substitution positions affected maximum absorption wavelength, whereas types of substituents, whether hydroxy or alkoxy groups, caused no significant effect.

There is a long history of utilization of phototherapy for treatment of skin conditions. Because of its longer wavelength, UVA1 phototherapy is able to penetrate into the dermis and subcutis. This depth of penetration, combined with its unique immunomodulating properties, makes UVA1 an effective treatment modality for many immune-mediated skin diseases.
