With improvements in molecular diagnostics tests, viruses are increasingly being found to be associated with what was previously described as idiopathic anterior uveitis. This review presents the clinical features of viral anterior uveitis.Herpes simplex virus/varicella zoster virus (HSV/VZV) are important causes of anterior uveitis, but other viruses ...

A 37 year old man presents with a five day history of progressively painful red right eye. He is photophobic and has blurred vision. For the past two days he has been using chloramphenicol eye drops, but his symptoms have not improved. The iris, ciliary body, and choroid constitute the uveal tract of the eye. Inflammation of these structures is termed

We undertook a study to determine the incidence of hypopyon, as well as the most common anterior uveitis entities with which hypopyon is associated. A total of 216 patients with anterior uveitis were studied. The uveitis was acute in 155. Of the 155 patients, 11 (7.1%) had hypopyon. Nine of the 11 patients with hypopyon were positive for HLA B27.

HL‐A types were determined in 90 successive patients with non‐granulomatous uveitis. Fifty‐one were HL‐A27 positive (55.7%) compared to 8.2% of controls. Of 16 patients with ankylosing spondylitis, 13 were HL‐A27 positive, as were two patients with a history of Reiter's syndrome.Twenty‐eight patients were HL‐A27 positive but had no evidence of ...

Cytomegalovirus Anterior Uveitis
2016The seroprevalence of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) ranges from 40 to 100 % being highest in less developed areas and is a significant cause of ocular disease both in immunocompromised and immunocompetent persons. CMV retinitis has long been recognized as a major cause of blindness in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection and perinatally ...

BMJ clinical evidence, 2011
Anterior uveitis is rare, with an annual incidence of 12/100,000 population, although it is more common in Finland (annual incidence of 23/100,000), probably because of genetic factors, such as high frequency of HLA-B27 in the population. It is often self-limiting, but can, in some cases, lead to complications such as posterior synechiae, cataract ...
