Patients with detectable KIT p.D816V in peripheral blood are at high risk for adverse systemic events during venom immunotherapy and treatment failure

open access: yesClinical and Translational Allergy
Background Recent studies have highlighted the importance of routine screening for the somatic missense KIT p.D816V variant in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL), and its association with severe sting anaphylaxis.

Efficient Masked Autoencoder for Birdsong Representation with Applications on Wild Bird Species Classification

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Research on mosquito feeding preferences and the malaria parasites they transmit is essential for understanding the interactions between hosts, vectors, and parasites. In this study, vertebrate hosts were identified in 72 mosquitoes. Most blood meals (58.7%) came from birds, representing 25 species, while 40.0% came from mammals (13 species), and 1.3 ...

Vitamin C and Vitamin E Protected B95-8 and Balb/c-3T3 Cells from Apoptosis Induced by Intermittent 50Hz ELF-EMF Radiation

open access: yesIranian Journal of Public Health, 2017
Background: The extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF), mainly emitted by electric transmission lines and household electronic appliances, is becoming a worldwide health risk. It is imperative to investigate the biological impacts of ELF-

animal2vec and MeerKAT: A self‐supervised transformer for rare‐event raw audio input and a large‐scale reference dataset for bioacoustics

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Bioacoustic research, vital for promoting conservation and understanding animal behaviour and ecology, faces a monumental challenge: analysing vast datasets where animal vocalizations are rare. While deep learning techniques are becoming standard, adapting them to bioacoustics remains difficult.

Monitoring African Megafauna in an Anthropogenic Landscape: A 15‐Year Case Study of the Vulnerable West African Giraffe

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
We used pattern recognition software to correct misidentifications in a 15‐year photographic database of the last, vulnerable West African giraffe population in Niger. After revealing substantial methodological errors that had inflated population estimates by nearly 19%, we corrected individual encounter histories and applied capture‐mark‐recapture ...

Prolonged IL‐33 Exposure Switches the Secreted Mast Cell Cytokine Profile From Pro‐Inflammatory to Pro‐Tolerant

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This study investigates the effect of IL‐33 and Hymenoptera venom on mast cell cytokine profiles under venom immunotherapy (VIT)‐like conditions. Our in vitro model of VIT‐like mast cell stimulation demonstrates a modulatory effect of IL‐33 on the secreted mast cell cytokine profile.

A Straightforward Algorithm for Diagnosing Hymenoptera Venom Allergy and Identifying the Relevant Venom for Immunotherapy

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
Conventional tests, such as specific IgE (sIgE) or intradermal testing (IDT), are usually sufficient. Combining both tests increases sensitivity, while additional tests, like the basophil activation test (BAT), provide no further benefit for the majority of patients.

Cost‐Effectiveness of Venom Immunotherapy in Preventing Severe Bee and Wasp Sting Reactions

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This study evaluates the cost‐effectiveness of Hymenoptera venom depot immunotherapy (HVDI) with Alutard SQ compared to adrenaline auto‐injectors (AAIs) in Denmark. The model incorporates both psychological and physiological benefits to estimate quality‐adjusted life years (QALYs).

Impact of Vitamin D deficiency on immunological and metabolic responses in women with recurrent pregnancy loss: focus on VDBP/HLA-G1/CTLA-4/ENTPD1/adenosine-fetal-maternal conflict crosstalk

open access: yesBMC Pregnancy and Childbirth
Background and aim Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), also known as recurrent implantation failure (RIF), is a distressing condition affecting women characterized by two or more consecutive miscarriages or the inability to carry a pregnancy beyond 20 weeks.
