Generalized approach to estimation of strains and stresses at blunt V‐notches under non‐localized creep

open access: yesFatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, 2016
Geometrical discontinuities such as notches need to be carefully analysed by engineers because of the stress concentration generated by them. Notches become even more important when the component is subjected, in service, to very severe conditions, such ...

Analysis of creep stresses and strains around sharp and blunt V-notches

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2016
Geometrical discontinues, such as notches, need careful consideration due to stress concentration appearing in their proximity. Notches become even more dangerous in the case of mechanical and structural components subjected to high temperature and ...

Crack bifurcation in sharp V-notches

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2020
Abstract In this paper, the crack initiation angle is studied experimentally and theoretically in sharp V-notched specimens subjected to mode I loading. Some experiments are performed on the V-notched compact tension (CT) and double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens made of polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) with two different notch opening angles.

Impacts of V-Notching the American Lobster

Journal of Shellfish Research, 2010
ABSTRACT Little information exists on the effects of lobsters that have been v-notched. To help analyze the results of the North Cape restoration program, which released 1.248 million v-notched females, a controlled v-notching laboratory experiment was conducted to determine whether mortality, shell disease, and the rate of notch loss differed between ...

The V-Notched Rail Shear Test

Journal of Composite Materials, 2007
A V-notched rail shear test has been developed for measuring the shear modulus and shear strength of composites and other materials. This test method, standardized as ASTM D 7078, incorporates attractive features of the existing Iosipescu and two-rail shear tests.

On T-Stresses Near V-Notches

International Journal of Fracture, 2010
The second term of stress field around a sharp V-notch under mode I loading was investigated. It was found that in the Cartesian coordinate system, unlike the T-stress in cracked bodies, the second term of Williams’ expansion in all three stress components is nonzero and its value depends on the distance from the notch tip.

Modified Proportional V-Notch Weirs

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1978
Seven different shaped modified proportional V-notches were designed and pertinent data for their use are given in tables 1 - 4. It is shown that the indication accuracies of these weirs are more than that of the conventional V-notch. For five of the designed weirs the indication accuracies are more than that of the conventional rectangular weir at ...

Improved Inverted V‐Notch or Chimney Weir

Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, 1990
This paper is devoted to the improvement of the measuring range of inverted V-notch (IVN) weir, a practical linear sharp-crested weir, designed earlier by the writers. The range of linearity of IVN can be considerably enhanced (by more than 200%) by the addition of a retangular weir of width 0.265W (W = half crest width) at a depth of 0.735d (d ...

Fracture at V-notches with contained plasticity

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2002
Abstract Fracture at V-notches with contained plasticity was studied. The tested material was a soft annealed tool steel, AISI O1, at −50°C. The material behaviour at this temperature was brittle for a standard fracture toughness test and ductile for a tensile test.
