Sustainable soil improvement via vacuum preloading

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Ground Improvement, 2010
The application of prefabricated vertical drains combined with vacuum and surcharge preloading is considered to be one of the most environmentally friendly ground improvement techniques. The natural atmospheric pressure is used to generate suction via a vacuum pump.

Vacuum-Preloaded Hydrostatic Shoe for Centerless Grinding

CIRP Annals, 1999
Abstract An innovative workpiece support, vacuum-preloaded hydrostatic shoe, is developed for lobing and chatter suppression in centerless grinding. The hydrostatic shoe applies vacuum-preloading to a hydrostatic bearing so as to provide a workpiece support of non-contact, good damping and high stiffness.

Numerical modeling of vacuum preloading and field applications

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2004
This study describes the effect of unsaturation at a drain boundary on the behaviour of a single prefabricated vertical drain subjected to vacuum preloading based on a two-dimensional plane strain finite element model incorporating the modified Cam–Clay model.

The Environmental Protection Methods for Vacuum Preloading Project

2011 International Conference on Computer Distributed Control and Intelligent Environmental Monitoring, 2011
Vacuum preloading is one of the effective technologies for consolidating soft foundation. The consolidation mechanism of vacuum preloading is explained. Meanwhile, the computing methods of vacuum preloading are classified, the advantages and disadvantages of the axial symmetry consolidation theory, the half analysis theory of horizontal movement and ...

Vacuum preloading consolidation of Yaoqiang Airport runway

Géotechnique, 2000
Yaoqiang Airport is an international airport serving the city of Jinan, China. The soil on the site consists of alternate layers of silty sand, silty clay, silt and clay. An under-consolidated soft clay layer approximately 4 m thick is located at between 7·5 m and 11·5 m depth above a silty clay layer.

The Analysis of Vacuum-Surcharge Preloading Method with FLAC3D

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
Based on the test section on the expressway in Jiangsu, the thesis makes a model and then conducts numerical simulation on the settlement of soft soil subgrade by using FLAC3D. The author set the filling layer null, and assigns a value to the loaded soil layer according to the construction sequence to realize multi-stage loading.

Effect of vacuum removal on consolidation settlement under a combined vacuum and surcharge preloading

Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 2019
Abstract The combined vacuum and surcharge preloading technique is extensively used to accelerate the consolidation process of subsoils. The effect of vacuum pressure is often considered as a loading/unloading cycle of mean effective stress, such that elastic rebound occurs after vacuum removal, which cannot explain the observed postconstruction ...

Properties of soil after surcharge or vacuum preloading

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Ground Improvement, 2016
This paper compares the results of laboratory studies carried out to determine the engineering properties, response under cyclic loading and the microstructure of soft clay after subjecting it to preloading by surcharge and vacuum. The samples for these tests were prepared at different initial consolidation pressures of 25, 50 and 100 kPa under K0 ...

Final state of soils under vacuum preloading

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2012
Vacuum preloading of clay deposits is becoming an increasingly popular ground improvement technique. Although many studies have been reported in literature, the mechanism of vacuum preloading is still not properly understood. Soil under vacuum preloading is expected to undergo an inward lateral deformation, therefore the influence of lateral ...
