Validation and validity beyond Messick

open access: yesPer Linguam, 2013
Following the texts of the Messick (1981: 10; 1980: 1023) formulations more closely, another representation of his well-known “Facets of validity” matrix is possible. This matrix can be read as four claims about language testing (“The technical adequacy of inferences made from test scores depends on multiple sources of empirical evidence; The ...

Validation of matching

open access: yes2016 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN), 2016
We introduce a technique to compute probably approximately correct (PAC) bounds on precision and recall for matching algorithms. The bounds require some verified matches, but those matches may be used to develop the algorithms. The bounds can be applied to network reconciliation or entity resolution algorithms, which identify nodes in different ...

Overview of molecular signatures of senescence and associated resources: pros and cons

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells can enter a stress response state termed cellular senescence that is involved in various diseases and aging. Detecting these cells is challenging due to the lack of universal biomarkers. This review presents the current state of senescence identification, from biomarkers to molecular signatures, compares tools and approaches, and highlights ...

Card games are effective tools to enhance foundation year health and safety inductions

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A series of three card games was developed to actively deliver health and safety education to foundation year students. Most students reported positive responses regarding their enjoyment (89.9 %) and learning (74.7 %) from all games evaluated. Data revealed significant improvements in health and safety knowledge (P < 0.0001).

Naked cuticle is essential for Drosophila wing development beyond Wingless signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Naked cuticle (Nkd), a Wnt signaling inhibitor, assumes extensive roles in Drosophila wing development. Overexpressing Nkd causes smaller, crumpled wings, while also perturbing multiple signaling pathways and developmental genes. A specific region (R1S) is critical for Nkd's function as a signaling integrator, offering new insights for studying its ...
