Application of Ensemble Kalman Filter With Covariance Localization in Data Assimilation of Radiation Belt Electrons

open access: yesSpace Weather
Data assimilation aims to enhance the system state estimate by merging sparse and diverse measurements with physical models, while considering their individual uncertainties. As a highly promising data assimilation technique, Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF)

First Analysis of Climate Forcing and Response to Updated Historical Anthropogenic Aerosol With the New CMIP7 Model ICON XPP

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract The simple plumes (SP) parameterization for anthropogenic aerosol effects on radiation and clouds has been used in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase six (CMIP6) and beyond. This study documents the new SP forcing data in preparation for use in CMIP phase seven (CMIP7) and its first application in the newly developed coupled ...

Measurements of Forbush Decrease Events at the Center of the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly With Muon Detectors

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 23, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract We present the construction and validation of a low‐cost muon detector in Paraguay, located at the center of the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAMA), where the geomagnetic cutoff rigidity R $R$ is 9.63 GV. The detector consists of plastic scintillator plates coupled with silicon photomultipliers for light detection.

Multi‐MeV Electron Occurrence and Lifetimes in the Outer Radiation Belt and Slot Region During the Maximum of Solar Cycle 22

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 23, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract The Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) observed the response of the Van Allen radiation belts to peak solar activity within solar cycle 22. This study analyses relativistic and ultra‐relativistic electron occurrence and loss timescales within the CRRES High Energy Electron Fluxometer (HEEF) data set, including during ...

Electron acceleration and loss caused by wave-particle interactions in the Van Allen radiation belts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Modern society relies substantially on satellite technology as it is involved in vital services like telecommunication services, Earth observation, navigation, and many more. There are more than 1000 operational satellites in Earth orbit and most of these spend at least some of their time in the harsh environment of the Van Allen radiation belts.

Shortening, Exhumation, and “Flip” in Tectonic Vergence of the Cordillera Central and Southern Dominican Republic

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 44, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract In a subduction zone, variability in the buoyancy and structure of the downgoing plate impacts deformation patterns in the overriding plate. Thick and buoyant lithosphere or smaller‐scale indentors entering the trench can lead to significant relief development and exhumation. To investigate such processes, we target the Cenozoic reorganization

How Do Inland Provinces Participate in China's International Economic Cooperation? A Case Study of Hunan's Approach to Africa

open access: yesAsian Politics &Policy, Volume 17, Issue 4, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Although there has been extensive research about the overseas engagement of China's coastal and border local governments, the participation of inland provinces, which lack geographical advantages, remains underexplored. Specifically, what motivates their selection of targeting regions?
