The Limit Cycle of the van der Pol Equation Is Not Algebraic

open access: yesJournal of Differential Equations, 1995
It is shown that no solution curve of the so-called Liénard equation \((y'' + f(y)y' + g(y) = 0)\) lies in an algebraic curve if \(f\) and \(g\) are nonzero polynomials, if \(\deg f \geq \deg g\) and if \(f/g\) is not constant. The proof is based on a curious but elementary lemma that gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a solution curve of a

Exceptional complex solutions of the forced van der Pol equation

open access: yes, 1999
: Consider the equation "v dv du = (1 \Gamma u 2 )v + ff \Gamma u describing the orbits of the forced van der Pol equation "u + (u 2 \Gamma 1) u + u = ff; " a small parameter, (1) in the phase plane.

Premium subsidy designs and crowding out of insurance demand

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Crop insurance is an important instrument to protect farmers against extreme weather events. Many countries provide subsidies for crop insurance products to make insurance more affordable for farmers. The Federal Crop Insurance Program in the United States and major European crop insurance programs such as in Spain, Italy, and France focus on ...

The causal effect of agricultural landscape simplification on Germany's grasslands during a compound drought and heatwave in 2018

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Preserving ecosystem services, along with economic and environmental benefits, will require future landscape policies to identify and incorporate relevant landscape features. In this paper, we investigate the causal effect of agricultural landscape simplification on drought‐related grassland damages.

Generalized Van der Pol equation and Hilbert's 16th problem

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2014
In this article, we study the bifurcation of limit cycles from the harmonic oscillator $\dot{x}=y$, $\dot{y}=-x$ in the system $$ \dot{x}=y,\quad \dot{y}=-x+\varepsilon f(y)\big(1-x^2\big), $$ where $\varepsilon$ is a small positive parameter ...

Immigrant mental health, safe work, discrimination, and state policies: From racism and xenophobia to health equity

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract An ecological model was developed to examine the pathways linking immigration state policies to physically safe work conditions and work volition, interpersonal discrimination, and mental health distress. The ecological framework was tested among two subsamples totaling 529 Latinx immigrant participants: (1) immigrants who resided in states ...

Immigration detention centers as torturing environments: Ethical reckonings, radical refusals, and implications for a psychology of resistance

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper examines psychologists' ethical dilemmas in immigration detention centers. Using critical psychology, border, and detention scholarship, it highlights psychologists' historical complicity in state violence, from the U.S. Enhanced Interrogation Program to current border regimes.

Chaotic oscillations of the Klein-Gordon equation with distributed energy pumping and van der Pol boundary regulation and distributed time-varying coefficients

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2014
Consider the Klein-Gordon equation with variable coefficients, a van der Pol cubic nonlinearity in one of the boundary conditions and a spatially distributed antidamping term, we use a variable-substitution technique together with the analogy with ...

Sitting in Many Camps—Innovative Approaches and Methods for First Nations‐Led Research Into Indigenous Peacebuilding

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Social Issues, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In 2021, a desktop review was conducted of published references to First Nations peoples' approaches to conflict and its management in Australia (Project Stage One), culminating in a report published in 2024. This article focuses on Project Stage Two, a complex, innovative research undertaking building on the findings of Stage One, and being ...
