ABSTRACT Moral licensing research suggests that prior moral behavior can sometimes relax self‐regulation, increasing openness to subsequent misconduct. Yet moral recognition may also foster moral consistency, particularly when moral credit is clearly attributable to the self or conveyed through norm‐relevant authority.
