Evolution of the vaquita/totoaba socio‐ecological system in the Upper Gulf of California, Mexico
The Upper Gulf of California (UGC) hosts a rich marine biodiversity. Complex climatic processes generate high biological productivity enabling the use of resources in a complex socio‐ecological processes (SEPs). Through a literature review, evolution and

Harbor porpoise losing its edge: Genetic time series suggests a rapid population decline in Iberian waters over the last 30 years. [PDF]
The Iberian harbor porpoises form a small and semi‐isolated population belonging to a distinctive ecotype adapted to the upwelling system in the southern European Atlantic waters. Here, we analyzed the mitochondrial genetic variation for a sampling spanning over the past 30 years and reported a dramatic decline in diversity.

Whole Genome Analyses of the Endangered Northern Abalone (<i>Haliotis kamtschatkana</i>) Reveal Population Differentiation and a Genomic Signature of a Dramatic Population Decline. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Despite widespread declines of many wildlife species, the effects of population decline on the genome and the recovery potential of affected species are still poorly understood, especially beyond a few charismatic species. The Northern abalone (or Pinto abalone; Haliotis kamtschatkana) is a marine gastropod mollusk of social, cultural and ...

Leveraging Synteny to Generate Reference Genomes for Conservation: Assembling the Genomes of Hector's and Māui Dolphins. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Escalating concern regarding the impacts of reduced genetic diversity on the conservation of endangered species has spurred efforts to obtain chromosome‐level genomes through consortia such as the Vertebrate Genomes Project. However, assembling reference genomes for many threatened species remains challenging due to difficulties obtaining ...

Vaquitas and gillnets: Mexico’s ultimate cetacean conservation challenge
There is a high risk that incidental mortality (bycatch) in gillnets will lead to extinction of the vaquita Phocoena sinus, a small porpoise endemic to Mexico’s northern Gulf of California. A zoned Biosphere Reserve established in 1993 proved ineffective

Red‐list status and extinction risk of the world's whales, dolphins, and porpoises
Abstract To understand the scope and scale of the loss of biodiversity, tools are required that can be applied in a standardized manner to all species globally, spanning realms from land to the open ocean. We used data from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List to provide a synthesis of the conservation status and extinction ...

Valoración económica para la protección socioambiental de la vaquita marina, una especie endémica
The impact of irrational human practices on the environment makes it indispensable to implement measures, such as the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve, in order to preserve the natural environment and habitats, and thus
