Primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) in the final 3 weeks of pregnancy may cause transplacental infection and neonatal varicella. Infants are most at risk of severe disease if born from 5 days before to 2 days after onset of the maternal varicella rash.

Live attenuated vaccines exist for varicella and herpes zoster. Varicella vaccine is largely administered in the immunocompetent population despite substantial evidence indicating its safety and effectiveness in immunocompromised groups.Varicella vaccine has been around for decades and its safety and efficacy in healthy children is well documented in ...

Reasons for adverse outcomes of infectious diseases are always under scrutiny. We expect infectious illnesses to have a specific course and outcome. Outcomes outside of the expected range are unacceptable, although the natural course of each infection includes them.

Kempe and Gershon in a commentary on the varicella vaccine (Pediatrics 60:930, December 1977) enumerate the factors that might influence the development of such a vaccine. They state that zoster immune globulin (ZIG), which can modify chickenpox in susceptible immunosuppressed children exposed to the varicella-zoster virus, is often not available ...

Varicella or chickenpox is a common, generally benign contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. The high degree of communicability of chickenpox during early childhood (generally 2-8 years of age) can be appreciated by the presence of protective antibodies in 85-90% of children. Although considered to be a mild disease, reported cases of

Localized varicella has been associated with UV-exposure and skin trauma. Varicella restricted to a pre-existent dermatitis is exceptional. The clinical features, cytohistologic and immunohistochemical results, as well as serologic data of 6 patients with a sudden eruption of vesicular and eroded lesions restricted to a pre-existent dermatitis are ...

To appreciate the risk of embryo-foetopathy in case of maternal varicella occurring before 20 weeks of gestation, as well as the maternal complication risk (notably pulmonary) in case of maternal varicella occurring the third trimester of pregnancy.Over the period from January 1987 to February 1995, 20 patients were managed for maternal varicella ...
