Grain Boundary Space Charge Engineering of Solid Oxide Electrolytes: Model Thin Film Study

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 14, 16 February 2026.
This study demonstrates unprecedented control of grain boundary electrical properties in solid electrolytes. Selective diffusion of cations through grain boundaries in thin films enables 12 orders of magnitude variation in ionic resistance, proving that systematic chemical modification of grain boundary electrical properties is feasible.

Computer simulation of ZnO varistors failures [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Zinc oxide varistors are multi-component ceramic devices produced by sintering ZnO powder together with small amounts of other oxides. Highly nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of ZnO varistors are used in electrical surge arresters.

Abnormal Expansion Along the Synthesis of Zinc Stannate: A Way for Porous Ceramics Without Addition of Pore Generators

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 2, February 2026.
The abnormal expansion associated with the simultaneous synthesis and sintering of Zn2SnO4 from ZnO and SnO2 is due to the reaction mechanism and correlated with the conversion. This phenomenon opens the way to manufacture porous ceramics without the addition of pore generators, simplifying the process, and especially the thermal treatment.
