Vascular access [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Society of Nephrology, 1992
Modern hemodialysis requires repeated reliable access to blood vessels capable of providing rapid extracorporeal blood flow. This necessity for reliable access to the circulation is the Achilles' heel of modern hemodialysis. Native and synthetic arteriovenous fistulas remain the preferred method of maintaining long-term hemodialysis access.

Needle-free connectors in tunneled central venous catheters for hemodialysis: A prospective single-centre safety and feasibility study

open access: yesGMS Hygiene and Infection Control
Background: Tunnelled central venous catheters (t-CVCs) remain essential for hemodialysis when arteriovenous access is not feasible, but catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is a major risk.

Primary Vascular Access [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, 2006
Primary vascular access is usually achievable by a distal autogenous arterio-venous fistula (AVF). This article describes the approach to vascular access planning, the usual surgical options and the factors affecting patency.

Emergency Vascular Access

open access: yesVeterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 2000
Establishing and maintaining vascular access is often vital to the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management of the small animal emergency surgical patient. Vascular access may be used for the delivery of crystalloids, colloids, blood components, medications, and anesthetic or sedative agents. It can also facilitate venous and arterial

European Standard Clinical Practice Guideline and EXPeRT Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Management of Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms in Children and Adolescents

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pediatric gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP‐NENs) are extremely rare and clinically heterogeneous. Management has largely been extrapolated from adult practice. This European Standard Clinical Practice Guideline (ESCP), developed by the EXPeRT network in collaboration with adult NEN experts, provides (adult) evidence ...

The Role of Ultrasound Examination in the Assessment of Suitability of Calcified Arteries for Vascular Access Creation—Mini Review

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2023
Arterial calcifications are present in 20–40% of patients with end-stage kidney disease and are more frequent among the elderly and diabetics. They reduce the possibility of arterio-venous fistula (AVF) formation and maturation and increase the ...

Health‐Related Quality of Life and Symptom Severity Among Patients With PIK3CA‐Related Overgrowth Spectrum: A Mixed‐Methods Study to Understand Real‐World Experience With Alpelisib Treatment

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background PIK3CA‐related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) includes several rare overgrowth disorders resulting from somatic gain‐of‐function mutations in PIK3CA. Despite treatment advances, including the recent approval of alpelisib for PROS in the United States, literature detailing the patient experience with PROS is limited.

The Role of Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Ataxia‐Telangiectasia

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Ataxia‐telangiectasia (A‐T) is a DNA repair disorder characterized by neurodegeneration, immunodeficiency, and cancer predisposition. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is an established therapy in related disorders such as Fanconi anemia (FA) and Nijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS), but its role in A‐T is unclear.

Impact of a change in vascular access flow volume after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty on cardiac function

open access: yesScience Progress, 2021
Vascular access (VA) is necessary for patients on hemodialysis, and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is a useful treatment for maintaining VA function. PTA immediately increases the VA flow volume, which can affect cardiac function.
