A cross-sectional study of vascular risk factors in a rural South African population : data from the Southern African Stroke Prevention Initiative (SASPI) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Background: Rural sub-Saharan Africa is at an early stage of economic and health transition. It is predicted that the 21st century will see a serious added economic burden from non-communicable disease including vascular disease in low-income countries

A Thickness Sensitive Vessel Extraction Framework for Retinal and Conjunctival Vascular Tortuosity Analysis [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Systemic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis are among the leading causes of annual human mortality rate. It is suggested that retinal and conjunctival vascular tortuosity is a potential biomarker for such systemic diseases. Most importantly, it is observed that the tortuosity depends on the thickness of these vessels.

VAFO-Loss: VAscular Feature Optimised Loss Function for Retinal Artery/Vein Segmentation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Estimating clinically-relevant vascular features following vessel segmentation is a standard pipeline for retinal vessel analysis, which provides potential ocular biomarkers for both ophthalmic disease and systemic disease. In this work, we integrate these clinical features into a novel vascular feature optimised loss function (VAFO-Loss), in order to ...

Interactive effects of vascular risk burden and advanced age on cerebral blood flow. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Vascular risk factors and cerebral blood flow (CBF) reduction have been linked to increased risk of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD); however the possible moderating effects of age and vascular risk burden on CBF in late life remain ...

Device for ECG prediction based on retinal vasculature analysis [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Pulsatile changes in retinal vascular geometry over the cardiac cycle have clinical implications for the diagnosis of ocular and systemic vascular diseases, including ischemia, coronary heart diseases, and diabetes mellitus and its complications. Thus, analysis of the pulsatile changes over the cardiac cycle is a potential non-invasive assessment for ...
