Administration of N-acetylcysteine for contrast-induced acute kidney injury; an updated mini-review [PDF]
Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a potential complication of medical imaging procedures that use contrast media. It is important to identify and manage risk factors for contrast-induced nephropathy and to monitor patients for signs of ...

Opposing Roles of S1P3 Receptors in Myocardial Function
Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a lysophospholipid mediator with diverse biological function mediated by S1P1–5 receptors. Whereas S1P was shown to protect the heart against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, other studies highlighted its ...

Vascular Smooth Muscle Contractile Function Declines With Age in Skeletal Muscle Feed Arteries
Aging induces a progressive decline in vasoconstrictor responses in central and peripheral arteries. This study investigated the hypothesis that vascular smooth muscle (VSM) contractile function declines with age in soleus muscle feed arteries (SFA ...

Increased Contractile Function of Human Saphenous Vein Grafts Harvested by “No-Touch” Technique
Saphenous vein grafts are the most common conduits used for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG); however, no more than 60% of vein grafts remain open after 10 years and graft failure is associated with poor clinical outcome.

Vasoactive Effects of Acute Ergot Exposure in Sheep
Ergotism is a common and increasing problem in Saskatchewan’s livestock. Chronic exposure to low concentrations of ergot alkaloids is known to cause severe arterial vasoconstriction and gangrene through the activation of adrenergic and serotonergic ...

Randomized preclinical study of machine perfusion in vascularized composite allografts
This study was designed to identify the optimum machine perfusion parameters for preservation of limbs before transplantation, and determine whether this was better than cold storage. Normothermic machine perfusion at a pressure of 70 mmHg (NMP‐70) provided superior preservation to cold storage after transplantation.

Non-Invasive Techniques Reveal Heifer Response to Fescue Endophyte Type in Grazing Studies
Cattle grazing tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceous) infected with wild-type endophytes (WE) leads to a syndrome commonly known as fescue toxicosis. Replacing WE tall fescue with a novel endophyte-infected (NE) tall fescue can mitigate this problem but

Is the microvasculature tone increasing with arterial hypertension?
Rationale: An increase in vascular tone is believed to be a major factor leading to arterial hypertension (AH). There are no means for a direct measurement of the vascular tone in clinical practice.
