Predictive Tools in the Care of Blood Donors: Prevention of Vasovagal Syndrome

open access: yes, 2018
Prediction in healthcare is essential in order to promote safe and quality care. Taking adequate care of blood donors, who perform an altruistic act towards society, is paramount. Therefore, the use of tools which allow to predict the risk of Vasovagal Syndrome during the act of blood donation is necessary.

Red Blood Cell Depletion in Patients With Hyperferritinemia: Comparison of Two Apheresis Systems

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Apheresis, Volume 41, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Red blood cell (RBC) apheresis is, alongside phlebotomy, a standard treatment for iron overload in hereditary hemochromatosis (HH). We compared the serum ferritin (SF) reduction, process parameters, duration, and side effects of two apheresis systems: Spectra Optia apheresis system (Optia) and Alyx apheresis collection system (Alyx).

Takotsubo Syndrome Associated with Neurally Mediated Reflex Syncope: A Meta-summary of Case Reports and Literature Review

open access: yesReviews in Cardiovascular Medicine
Background: Neurally mediated reflex syncope (NMRS) has been recently described as a possible trigger of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS). There are few data in the literature about this association.

Hemodynamic Response to the Head-Up Tilt Test in Patients With Syncope as a Predictor of the Test Outcome: A Meta-Analysis Approach

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2019
Aim: The paper presents a meta-analysis of studies comparing hemodynamic parameters: heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (sBP), diastolic blood pressure (dBP), and stroke volume (SV) measured during head-up tilt table test (HUTT) in patients with ...

Cerebral Perfusion Monitoring Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy During Head-Up Tilt Table Test in Patients With Orthostatic Intolerance

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2019
The head-up tilt table test (HUT) is one of the primary clinical examinations for evaluating orthostatic intolerance (OI). HUT can be divided into three phases: dynamic tilt phase (supine to tilt up), static tilt phase (remain tilted at 70°), and post ...

Plasma metabolomic profile in orthostatic intolerance children with high levels of plasma homocysteine

open access: yesItalian Journal of Pediatrics
Background Orthostatic intolerance, which includes vasovagal syncope and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, is common in children and adolescents.

Adverse effects of intermittent flow therapeutic plasmapheresis in neurology patients in a resource constrained setting

open access: yesGlobal Journal of Transfusion Medicine, 2019
Introduction: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) aims at removing harmful substances from patient's plasma. It has become a treatment option in a variety of neurological disorders with good outcome.

Mechanisms of tilt‐induced vasovagal syncope in healthy volunteers and postural tachycardia syndrome patients without past history of syncope

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2019
Upright tilt table testing has been used to test for vasovagal syncope (VVS) but can result in “false positives” in which tilt‐induced fainting (tilt+) occurs in the absence of real‐world fainting.

Decreasing cerebral oxygen consumption during upright tilt in vasovagal syncope

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2017
We measured changes in transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during 70° upright tilt in patients with recurrent vasovagal syncope (VVS, N = 20), postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS, N = 20), and healthy controls (N =
