Primary thinning of the myocutaneous vastus lateralis flap

International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2000
To expand the indicational spectrum of the myocutaneous vastus lateralis flap, which is often too voluminous for intraoral application, primary thinning of the fat and muscle component of this microsurgical transplant was performed in 14 patients. The surgical technique includes subfascial localization of at least one myocutaneous perforating vessel of

Primary Hydatid Cyst of Vastus Lateralis Muscle

Acta Chirurgica Belgica, 2004
Musculoskeletal system is rarely involved by hydatid cyst, the larval form of Echinococcus Granulosus. A 37-year old man was diagnosed as having a cystic mass within his left thigh musculature. Preoperative computerized tomography suggested an unusual location of echinococcus although serology could not confirm the diagnosis.

Versatility of the Free Vastus Lateralis Muscle Flap

Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection & Critical Care, 2008
A flap that carries sufficient tissue with satisfactory pedicle length or diameter and with minor donor site morbidity is an ideal option for the reconstructive surgeon. Many flaps have been described with each one having specific advantages. The vastus lateralis (VL)-muscle flap is among them, but no special attention has been given to its valuable ...

Trunk Reconstruction with the Free Vastus Lateralis Flap

Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery, 1998
A case is presented of a massive, full-thickness, trunk-wall defect successfully reconstructed with a free-tissue transfer of the entire vastus lateralis muscle. Indications, technical details, and donor-site considerations are discussed.

The Free Vastus Lateralis Flap

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1992
The suitability of the thigh as a donor site for a new free flap was examined in 100 cadavers. It was found that the vastus lateralis muscle can be used to form a myocutaneous or fasciomuscular flap, the raising of which causes no technical problems and leads to no functional and only minor aesthetic impairments.

Calcific tendinitis of the vastus lateralis muscle

Skeletal Radiology, 1991
Three cases of calcific tendinitis occurring at an unusual site (vastus lateralis tendon) are described. Findings on conventional radiography and computed tomography together with the clinical history are characteristic for this disorder and reflect its natural evolution. The actual role of magnetic resonance imaging seems limited to excluding neoplasm

Temporal Activity of Vastus Medialis Obliquus and Vastus Lateralis in Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis

American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, 2002
Knee osteoarthritis has a major impact on quadriceps function, yet its effect on the specific temporal recruitment of vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the electromyographic onset of vastus medialis obliquus activity relative to that of vastus lateralis in individuals with symptomatic knee ...

A Novel Method for Measuring Electromechanical Delay on the Vastus Medialis Obliquus and Vastus Lateralis

Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology, 2009
Abstract Electromechanical delay (EMD) of the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) is determined by measuring the interval between the time of onset of muscle activities and the time of onset of mechanical output. However, individual mechanical output of the VMO or the VL cannot be obtained with the conventional method because of ...

Segmental Anatomy of the Vastus Lateralis

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2015
The vastus lateralis muscle is a versatile donor site for pedicled and free flaps that, despite great potential, remains unpopular. Although the muscle is classically described as a single belly, evidence exists for a more complex morphology. The aim of this study was to investigate the segmental anatomy of the vastus lateralis muscle and the ...
