Commercial aviation VDL choices
IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine, 2003The purpose of this study was to analyze digital data link communications technologies in a line-of-sight environment. Because there is a global debate over selecting the next generation VHF data link (VDL) technology, this paper evaluates each of them for the terminal and enroute airspace only.

VDL Mode E Receiver Performance Measurments
IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine, 2006VDL Mode E is a digital communications system proposed as a worldwide standard for replacement of the existing analog AM voice system used for VHF aeronautical communications. It provides a needed increase in voice channel capacity as well as offering a digital data link for CPDLC with the high integrity and low latency needed for time-critical ATC ...

Deriving a compiler from an operational semantics written in VDL
Computer Languages, Systems and Structures, 1985This paper addresses the issue of compiler correctness. The approach taken is to systematically construct a correct compiler for a language from a formal semantic definition of the language. For this purpose, an operational semantics of a language is chosen as the basis for the approach.

Estimation of VDL mode 2 with hidden transmitters
2009 IEEE Aerospace conference, 2009The VDL Mode 2 aeronautical data link uses a p-persistent Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) channel access protocol that, like all CSMA systems, is susceptible to the hidden transmitter condition. Simulations have shown that the impact of hidden transmitters in the aeronautical environment can be significant.

Collaboratively Constructing a VDL-Based Icon System for Knowledge Tagging
Tag system for a knowledge organization system centralizes and provides the tags that can be employed in classifying, sharing and seeking knowledge for personal or organizational use within a social community. Considering current constraints of textual tag system and developing iconic tag system, VDL-based iconic tag system has been built and validated

Comparison of VDL modes in the terminal domain
2004 IEEE Aerospace Conference Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.04TH8720), 2005In This work we investigate the comparative performance of VDL modes 2, 3 and 4 by simulating mobile aircraft that dynamically establish and disconnect links to the ground station. The principal consideration was to model and simulate realistic data traffic and aircraft traffic patterns in the terminal domain, which in these simulations is the area ...

VDL—a Definition system for all levels
ACM SIGARCH Computer Architecture News, 1973The VDL system for the description of programming languages which was originally used for the definition of PL/I is extended to the description of processors. This paper shows the relationship between the language of definition and the abstract machine over which the semantics of the language are specified.
