The Role of Human Movement in the Transmission of Vector-Borne Pathogens

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2009
Human movement is a key behavioral factor in many vector-borne disease systems because it influences exposure to vectors and thus the transmission of pathogens. Human movement transcends spatial and temporal scales with different influences on disease dynamics.

An epidemiological survey of vector-borne pathogens infecting cattle in Kyrgyzstan

open access: yesParasitology International, 2023
Cattle production is a major contributor to the national economy of Kyrgyzstan. Most cattle in Kyrgyzstan are managed via extensive systems and graze in communal pastures. As a result, infestations with ectoparasites are widespread, implying that various vector-borne diseases might be common in cattle.

Vector-Borne Pathogens in Stray Dogs in Northeastern Turkey

Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases, 2017
This experiment was carried out to attain prevalence and molecular characterization of pathogens causing canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) including babesiosis, hepatozoonosis, leishmaniasis, filariosis (Dirofilaria immitis, Dirofilaria repens, and Acanthocheilonema reconditum), ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia canis), and anaplasmosis (Anaplasma platys) in ...

Seroprevalence of vector-borne pathogens in dogs from Croatia

Parasitology Research, 2018
Canine vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) are a group of globally distributed and rapidly spreading microorganisms transmitted by arthropods. In the present survey, we investigated Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia canis, Dirofilaria immitis and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato seroprevalence between three groups of dogs (asymptomatic, suspected and deceased) from ...

Prevalence of vector-borne pathogens in dogs from Haiti

Veterinary Parasitology, 2016
Canine vector-borne pathogens are common on some Caribbean islands, but survey data in Haiti are lacking. To determine the prevalence of selected vector-borne pathogens in dogs from Haiti, we tested blood samples collected from 210 owned dogs, 28 (13.3%) of which were infested with Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks at the time of blood collection.

Modeling Approach Influences Dynamics of a Vector-Borne Pathogen System

Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, 2019
The choice of a modeling approach is a critical decision in the modeling process, as it determines the complexity of the model and the phenomena that the model captures. In this paper, we developed an individual-based model (IBM) and compared it to a previously published ordinary differential equation (ODE) model, both developed to describe the same ...

Vector-borne pathogens in dogs from Guatemala, Central America

Veterinary Parasitology: Regional Studies and Reports, 2020
Vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) of dogs have been extensively studied worldwide, though scientific information for some countries, as is the case for Guatemala, is almost nonexistent. From 2012 to 2015, 975 dogs residing in different departments of Guatemala were sampled and screened using a rapid ELISA for detecting antigen of Dirofilaria immitis and ...

Molecular survey of bovine vector-borne pathogens in Cebu, Philippines

Veterinary Parasitology, 2013
Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) continue to threaten the worldwide livestock industry, but comprehensive epidemiological surveys on such diseases have not been conducted in the Philippines. In the present study, we screened 408 bovine blood samples from 9 areas in Cebu, Philippines, for various VBD pathogens using specific PCR assays. The results revealed

Virulence of Vector‐borne Pathogens. A Stochastic Automata Model of Perpetuationa

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1994
To determine how virulence may be perpetuated in populations of vector-borne pathogens, we simulated their fitness in a stochastic simulation based on cellular automata. Thereby, directly transmissible pathogens that differed in virulence were permitted to compete for hosts with similarly virulent pathogens that could infect hosts remotely because they

Nonlinearities in transmission dynamics and efficient management of vector‐borne pathogens

Ecological Applications, 2019
AbstractIntegrated Pest Management (IPM) is an approach to minimizing economic and environmental harm caused by pests, and Integrated Vector Management (IVM) uses similar methods to minimize pathogen transmission by vectors. The risk of acquiring a vector‐borne infection is often quantified using the density of infected vectors.
