The Ventilatory Recruitment Threshold for Carbon Dioxide

American Review of Respiratory Disease, 1990
Abstract We report our initial experience with a technique with which the chemoresponsiveness of the respiratory controller can be characterized in terms of an inspiratory on-switch threshold to CO2. After suppression of phasic respiratory muscle activity by mechanical ventilation, a CO2 recruitment threshold (PCO2RT) was defined as ...

Determination of Anaerobic Threshold by Ventilatory Frequency*

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 1989
Detection of anaerobic threshold (AT) requires either invasive techniques or expensive gas analyzers and somewhat complicated procedures. The purpose of this study was to determine if ventilatory frequency (f) could be used to detect AT. Thirteen (seven females) healthy, non-smoking, physically active adults (21-44 years) volunteered to perform ...

Reliability of assessments of ventilatory thresholds

Journal of Sports Sciences, 1984
Abstract The reproducibility of the assessment of ventilatory thresholds was investigated in two test‐retest experiments, one performed on a cycle ergometer with 21 moderately active male subjects and the other on a treadmill with 20 well‐trained male subjects.

Ventilatory Threshold in Children: A Review

Pediatric Exercise Science, 2002
Ventilatory threshold (VT) is an important index of aerobic exercise function. The non-invasive nature of assessing VT and the fact that VT can be determined without obtaining a maximal exertion makes it broadly appealing to study in both healthy and diseased populations.

Ventilatory responses to exercise performed below and above the first ventilatory threshold

European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology, 1994
These experiments examined the changes in ventilation at the start and end of exercise. Six subjects walked on a treadmill at two work rates above and two below that corresponding to their first ventilatory thresholds, for three durations. The subjects also exercised at the lowest and highest work rates while inspiring oxygen-enriched air.

Effects of Training at the Ventilatory Threshold on the Ventilatory Threshold and Performance in Trained Distance Runners

The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 1999
This study compared the effects of different frequencies of training specifically at the ventilatory threshold (VT) in already trained distance runners. The purposes of the investigation were to determine if the training elicited favorable performance enhancements and, if so, to provide information regarding a more beneficial frequency of VT training ...

Lactate and ventilatory thresholds: disparity in time course of adaptations to training

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1985
We tested the hypothesis that the lactate threshold (Tlac) during incremental exercise could be increased significantly during the first 3 wk of endurance training without any concomitant change in the ventilatory threshold (Tvent). Tvent is defined as O2 uptake (VO2) at which ventilatory equivalent for O2 [expired ventilation per VO2 (VE/VO2 ...

A systems model approach to the ventilatory anaerobic threshold

European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology, 1987
An analogue systems model of whole-body human bioenergetics predicts a change in kinetics of VO2 time series values as a result of exercise levels above an anaerobic threshold. Plotted VO2 results from exercising subjects appear to confirm this change.

An Evaluation of the Predictive Validity and Reliability of Ventilatory Threshold

Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2004
To identify a valid and reliable method to determine 40-km time trial (40K) performance in a laboratory setting.Part 1: Ventilatory threshold (VT) and 40K performance were determined on two occasions (February/September) using two subsets of cyclists (N = 15 each; VO(2max) 67.6 +/- 4.2/71.5 +/- 3.0 mL x kg(-1) x min(-1)) to determine the predictive ...

A New Approach for the Determination of Ventilatory and Lactate Thresholds

International Journal of Sports Medicine, 1992
In order to determine the ventilatory threshold (VT) and the lactate threshold (LT) in a reliable way, a new method is proposed and compared with conventional methods. The new method consists of calculating the point that yields the maximal distance from a curve representing ventilatory and metabolic variables as a function of oxygen uptake (VO2) to ...
