Abstract The aim of the chapter is to re-consider the cognitive and linguistic processes involved as to what makes verbal irony. Looking across its different functions, the chapter argues that it is the conceptual frames that constitute the accepted process in the production of verbal irony.

jlse, 1997Afin de critiquer et de rectifier la theorie standard de l'ironie verbale developpee par Quintilien, l'A. propose ici une etude detaillee de la structure semantique de cette figure rhetorique. D'une part, il montre que la theorie de Quintilien est trop vaste parce qu'elle peut s'appliquer a des locutions qui ne sont pas ironiques.

Children's Understanding of the Meaning and Functions of Verbal Irony
Child Development, 1996We investigated children's understanding of irony and sensitivity to irony's meanness and humor. In Study 1, 89 participants (5-6-year-olds, 8-9-year-olds, adults) heard ironic and literal criticisms, and literal compliments. Comprehension of irony emerged between 5 and 6 years of age.
