The programmed DNA elimination and formation of micronuclei in germ line cells of the natural hybridogenetic water frog Pelophylax esculentus

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2018
DNA elimination is a radical form of gene silencing and occurs both in somatic and germ cells. The programmed DNA elimination occurs during gametogenesis in interspecies hybrids that reproduce by hybridogenesis (stick insects, fishes, and amphibians) and

Yellow patterns polymorphism of the fire salamander Salamandra salamandra in Poland

open access: yesActa Herpetologica, 2018
We analysed variation of dorsal yellow patterns in 2077 individuals that represented 23 populations from the northern parts of the Sudetes and the Carpathian Mountains. We distinguished four types of yellow patterns: spotted (50.1%), spotted-and-striped (

The evolutionary origin of vertebrates

open access: yes, 2021
The first introductory chapter of the second volume summarizes our current understanding of vertebrate evolution. After providing a short primer on the principles of phylogenetic systematics, the chapter provides an overview of the phylogenetic ...

De novo synthesis of short‐chain aldehydes and hydrocarbons secreted by the brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, mainly secretes 4‐oxo‐(E)‐2‐hexenal, (E)‐2‐decenal, dodecane and tridecane, a mixture representative of that released by many heteropterans. We demonstrated that H. halys can synthesise these secretory components de novo using dietary glucose.

Heterotropic regulation and negative homotropic cooperativity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We identified a structural module common to some proteins that couple negative cooperativity with heterotropic regulation, two features that rarely coexist. These proteins are ring‐like and present an ordered asymmetry whereby noncontacting subunits are symmetric, and their tertiary structure differs from that of contacting subunits.

IImpact of Glazing and Freezing Preservation on the Chemical Composition and Caloric Value of Common Carp, Cyprinus Carpio L.1758 [PDF]

open access: yesBasrah Journal of Veterinary Research
The study focused on the preservation of economically important common carp Cyprinus carpio L. by Glazing and evaluated the characteristics and properties changes in nutritional composition during fresh and frozen flesh at (–18± 2) °C ...

Vertebrate innovations [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2000
Vertebrate innovations include neural crest cells and their derivatives, neurogenic placodes, an elaborate segmented brain, endoskeleton, and an increase in the number of genes in the genome. Comparative molecular and developmental data give new insights into the evolutionary origins of these characteristics and the complexity of the vertebrate ...

Avidin is evolutionarily conserved in fish but dispensable for development and resistance against Streptococcus agalactiae in zebrafish

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The presence of biotin‐binding avidin proteins in fish and their biological significance are poorly characterized. We cataloged fish avidins and demonstrate that they are widely present and evolutionarily conserved. We created avd knockout zebrafish and show that zebavidin is dispensable for development and that resistance of avd knockout embryos in ...

Additively Manufactured Geometry‐Reconfigurable Soft Neural Probes With Monolithic Multifunctionality

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A geometry‐reconfigured additive manufacturing strategy converts planar printed soft materials into soft compact neural probes with integrated hydrogel electrodes and microfluidic channels. The resulting NeuroMAP platform enables scalable multichannel recording, localized chemical delivery, stable in vivo electrophysiological recording, and reduced ...

Autism and mild epilepsy associated with a de novo missense pathogenic variant in the GTPase effector domain of DNM1

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part C: Seminars in Medical Genetics, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Dynamin 1 is a GTPase protein involved in synaptic vesicle fission, which facilitates the exocytosis of neurotransmitters necessary for normal signaling. Pathogenic variants in the DNM1 gene are associated with intractable epilepsy, often manifested as infantile spasms at onset, developmental delay, and a movement disorder, and are located in ...
