The Implementation of Persistent Spinal Pain Syndrome (PSPS): Mechanism‐Based Recommendations

open access: yesPain Practice, Volume 26, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Background In 2021, the term persistent spinal pain syndrome (PSPS) was introduced. PSPS type 2 (PSPS‐T2) replaced the unsatisfactory term failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS). PSPS type 1 (PSPS‐T1) is a clinical picture of signs and symptoms of FBSS but without prior surgery. PSPS applies to any spinal level.

Relationship of Preexisting Vertebral Fractures and Endplate Injury to Intervertebral Bridging Ossification After Balloon Kyphoplasty for Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures

open access: yesJournal of Osteoporosis, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Introduction Intervertebral bridging ossification (IBO) occasionally occurs after balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) for osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs), contributing to stabilization. However, the predisposing factors remain unclear. This study aimed to identify preoperative factors associated with IBO formation. Methods This was a retrospective cohort

Subject‐Specific Musculoskeletal Modeling: The Future of Predicting and Preventing Proximal Junctional Failure in Adult Spinal Deformity

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 8, Issue 4, December 2025.
Proximal junctional failure is a devastating complication in spinal deformity surgery. Subject‐specific musculoskeletal modeling offers a novel approach to improve prediction and prevention by integrating biomechanics, muscle function, and bone quality.

Visualizing Real‐World Pain Treatment Pathways in Chronic Disease: A Sequence‐Based Analysis of Polypharmacy in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology, Volume 7, Issue 11, November 2025.
Objective To examine real‐world patterns in pain management among adults with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), we focused on the sequencing of pain modalities, polypharmacy, and demographic variation. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of electronic health records from adults with SLE treated at a single academic medical center between ...

Development of a Predictive Model for Large‐Volume Pleural Effusion After Separation Surgery in Patients With Spinal Metastatic Tumors

open access: yesCancer Reports, Volume 8, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Separation surgery followed by radiotherapy has emerged as a prevalent approach for managing spinal metastatic tumors. However, large‐volume postoperative pleural effusion (POPE) represents a challenging complication, as it potentially delays subsequent treatments and increases morbidity. This study aims to identify risk factors for
