Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and VCSEL arrays for communication and sensing
2022Future generations of optical wireless communication and sensing systems require compact, low-cost, reliable, and highly efficient light sources capable of transmitting modulated beams across free space at gigabit per second (Gbps) data rates and pulsed beams with sub-nanosecond rise and fall times.

Red vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) for consumer applications
SPIE Proceedings, 2008There are many potential applications of visible, red (650nm - 690nm) vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) including high speed (Gb) communications using plastic optical fiber (POF), laser mouse sensors, metrology, position sensing.

Time-localized Structures in Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs)
Numerical Simulation of Optoelectronic Devices, 2014, 2014In this presentation we will review the results recently obtained on Time-Localized Structures (TLS) in VCSELs coupled to an external cavity. We show that, when the cavity roundtrip is much larger than the medium timescales, this system exhibits a temporal aspect-ratio large enough to host TLS. Two configurations will be considered.

Use of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers(VCSELs) for spectroscopic applications
Semiconductor Lasers Advanced Devices and Applications, 1995We describe the first report of the use of VCSELs for spectroscopic applications. Using a 760 nm VCSEL tuned to one of the weak A band transitions of oxygen, a minimum detectivity of 1600 ppm was obtained, in these preliminary experiments.

Temperature Effects on the Power Characteristics of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs)
2022A numerical analysis on temperature variation effects on the output power (Pout) characteristics of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is presented in this paper. While previous works in the literature mostly omitting the thermal effects.

MOVPE growth of visible vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs)
Journal of Crystal Growth, 2003Abstract This paper summarises the development of the epitaxial growth process for visible vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) in metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The production of these devices which are of particular interest, e.g.

Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs): Optics, Risk, Collaborations
Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics 2012, 2012The 1989 VCSEL-advance by this group, which marked a turning point in VCSEL development efforts, was a curious culmination built upon outside publications, optical innovations from the group, risky-research funding, and resolute inter-company collaboration. Article not available.

Tunnel junctions have been widely used in the fabrication of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers since it allows fabrication of low electrical resistance as well as low optical absorption Bragg mirrors. The basic idea is to inject holes through a highly doped reverse biased n+/p+ tunnel junction.

The polarisation of the fundamental transverse mode of VCSEL can change when the injected current is altered. Switching of the polarisation associated to the excitation of higher order modes has been observed. It has also been noted that the strain induced during the fabrication causes birefringence in VCSEL.

Spatial transverse modes and polarization states are experimentally studied in single vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and phased-locked VCSEL arrays emitting at 1.3 mu m wavelength. Analysis of the polarization-resolved near fields, far fields and emission spectra permit the observation of the competition between the different modes ...
