Enhancement of fronts by vertical mixing

Deep Sea Research Part B. Oceanographic Literature Review, 1990
Microstructure observations near upwelled fronts indicate considerable variation in the structure of vertical mixing across the frontal region. Observations of cool filaments off northern California indicate that within the cool (dense) core of filaments the raised pycnocline inhibits the penetration to middepths of surface‐generated mixing.

Vertical Mixing in the Indonesian Thermocline

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1992
Abstract Western Pacific central and tropical waters characterized by a subsurface salinity maximum spread into the Indonesian seas as part of the Indonesian throughflow. Within the Indonesian seas this salinity maximum is attenuated and, in some places, completely removed.

Phytoplankton Responses to Vertical Tidal Mixing

1986
Vertical mixing of the water column in estuaries and other coastal environments requires an input of mechanical energy that is mainly provided by the tides, the wind stress on the water surface and the fresh water runoff. Variations in these three sources are known to have a marked influence on the phytoplankton. At the seasonal scale, river runoff has

Vertical Mixing by Langmuir Circulations

Spill Science & Technology Bulletin, 2000
Abstract Wind and surface wave frequently induce Langmuir circulations (LC) in the upper ocean, and the LC contribute to mixing materials down from the surface. In this paper we analyze large-eddy simulation (LES) cases based on surface-wave-averaged, dynamical equations and show that the effect of the LC is a great increase in the vertical mixing ...

Analysis of Mixed Convection in Vertical Convergent Channels

Volume 1, 2004
Air mixed convection in a convergent channel with the two principal flat plates at uniform heat flux is analyzed numerically. In the considered system two parallel adiabatic extensions are placed downstream the convergent channel. The forced flow is obtained by imposing a pressure drop between the inlet and the outlet of the channel.

Vertical Mixing in the Equatorial Undercurrent

Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1973
Abstract Vertical mixing in the ocean affects the formation of water masses as well as the vertical distribution of nutrients and dissolved substances. This study is an investigation of the vertical mixing in the Pacific Equatorial Undercurrent (Cromwell Current).

Vertical Mixing and Primary Production

1980
Vertical mixing, by controlling the availability of substrates for phytoplankton growth (light, nutrients) is fundamental to the structure and dynamics of primary production in the sea. Its importance changes in kind depending on the level of resolution with which we wish to investigate the system, from determining overall patterns of productivity, to ...

Vertical mixing of oil droplets by breaking waves

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2002
Oil spilled on a sea surface can be dispersed by a variety of natural processes, of which the influence of breaking waves is dominant. Breaking waves are able to split the slick into small droplets, facilitating oil mixing in the water column. Vertical dynamics of the droplets plays a major role in the oil mass exchange between the slick and the water ...
