Vertical wind shear in Neptune’s upper atmosphere explained with a modified thermal wind equation

open access: yesIcarus, 2018
Abstract We present observations of Neptune taken in H-(1.4–1.8 µm) and K’-(2.0–2.4 µm) bands on the nights of July 3, 2013 and August 20, 2014 from the 10-m W.M. Keck II Telescope using NIRC2 coupled to the Adaptive Optics (AO) system. We track the positions of ∼100 bright atmospheric features over a 4–5 h window on each night to derive zonal ...

Atomic Layer Deposition in Transistors and Monolithic 3D Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Transistors are fundamental building blocks of modern electronics. This review summarizes recent progress in atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the synthesis of two‐dimensional (2D) metal oxides and transition‐metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), with particular emphasis on their enabling role in monolithic three‐dimensional (M3D) integration for next ...

Magnetothermal‐Triggered Response and Self‐Healing of Recyclable and Reprocessable Nanocomposites for Actuation Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Developing recyclable materials for magnetic robotics that combine rapid response and self‐healing properties is challenging. Hence, this study focuses on the integration of magnetothermal nanoparticles into a dynamic sorbitol‐based vitrimer, a recyclable composite capable of remote actuation and self‐healing by magnetic heating.

Curvature‐Tuned Friction at Electrified Ionic Liquid Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene curvature plays a key role in friction electrotunability at single‐asperity contacts lubricated by ionic liquids. A 9 nm radius yields stronger tunability than larger radii, with distinct friction coefficients at low and high loads indicating a shift in the slippage plane.

The Role of Wind Velocity, Wind Shear, and Electric Fields in the Formation of Sporadic E (Es)

open access: yesAtmosphere
The important role of neutral wind, its vertical shear, and external electric fields in the formation and localization of sporadic E (Es) are demonstrated analytically and numerically in equatorial and mid-latitude regions.

Direct numerical simulations of aeolian sand ripples

open access: yes, 2014
Aeolian sand beds exhibit regular patterns of ripples resulting from the interaction between topography and sediment transport. Their characteristics have been so far related to reptation transport caused by the impacts on the ground of grains entrained ...

How Vertical Wind Shear Affects Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change: An Overview [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Over the last 30 years tropical cyclone (TC) intensity forecasts, for various (yet somewhat puzzling) reasons, have not achieved near the level of improvement of the TC track forecast. Although TCs have been studied intensively throughout the twentieth century, the community has surprisingly little quantitative knowledge as to how these storms interact

Structural and Chemical Engineering of Sub‐Nanochannel Membranes Toward Ion Selectivity

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent advances in structural and chemical engineering of sub‐nanochannels for ion selectivity. We first introduce fundamental ion transport mechanisms within sub‐nanochannels, followed by strategies to tune pore size, geometry, and surface functionalities, categorized into charge‐based, ion‐recognition, hydrophilic bonding, and ...

Wind speed and direction shears with associated vertical motion during strong surface winds [PDF]

open access: yes
Strong surface winds recorded at the NASA 150-Meter Ground Winds Tower facility at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, are analyzed to present occurrences representative of wind shear and vertical motion known to be hazardous to the ascent and descent of ...
