Treatment planning for laser-accelerated very-high energy electrons

Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2009
In recent experiments, quasi-monoenergetic and well-collimated very-high energy electron (VHEE) beams were obtained by laser-plasma accelerators. We investigate their potential use for radiation therapy. Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the influence of the experimental characteristics such as beam energy, energy spread and initial angular ...

Challenges of Dosimetry of Ultra-Short Pulsed Very High Energy Electron Beams [PDF]

open access: yesPhysica Medica, 2017
Very high energy electrons (VHEE) in the range from 100 to 250MeV have the potential of becoming an alternative modality in radiotherapy because of their improved dosimetric properties compared with 6-20MV photons generated by clinical linear accelerators (LINACs).

Characteristics of very high‐energy electron beams for the irradiation of deep‐seated targets

Medical Physics, 2021
PurposeDriven by advances in accelerator technology and the potential of exploiting the FLASH effect for the treatment of deep‐seated targets (>5 cm), there is an active interest in the construction of devices to deliver very high‐energy electron (VHEE) beams for radiation therapy.

A study of very high energy gamma-rays and electrons with GLAST

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2001
The GLAST instrument is dedicated to gamma-ray astronomy in a wide energy range of 20 MeV to 300 GeV, but could be used to study gamma-rays or cosmic electrons up to a few TeV. In this paper we study the high energy response of GLAST from 10 GeV up to one TeV.

Cryogenic Accelerator Design for Compact Very High Energy Electron Therapy

2022
We report on the development of a cryogenic X-band (11.424 GHz) accelerator to provide electron beams for Very High Energy Electron therapy. The distributed coupling linac is designed with a 135° phase advance, capable of producing a 100 MeV/m accelerating gradient in a one-meter structure using only 19 MW when operating at 77 K.

Electron propagator in a strong electromagnetic field in the very-high-energy limit

Physical Review D, 1990
The solution of the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equation for the propagator (Green's function) in the very-high-energy limit (1/{ital E} approximation) is studied in the context of quantum beamstrahlung.'' The results obtained are necessary to consider bremsstrahlung energy loss by electrons and positrons in high-energy {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus ...

Characteristics of focused very high energy electron (VHEE) beams in radiotherapy

2023
Very High Energy Electron (VHEE) beams represent a promising alternative for treating deep-seated tumors. However, VHEE beams generate quasi-uniform dose distribution along the beam path, leading to healthy tissue overexposed. Focused VHEE beams are a revolutionary radiotherapy technology that enables concentrating doses into a small and well-defined ...

Using multiple scattering measurements of very high energy electrons for medical imaging

Medical Imaging 2026: Physics of Medical Imaging
electronCT (eCT) is an imaging method, which uses the multiple scattering of electrons to acquire images of unknown objects. This imaging method is a candidate for image-guided radiotherapy with very high energy electrons (100-250 MeV). In eCT, a low emittance pencil beam is propagated through an object and the scattering of the beam is quantified. The

Electron Ring Accelerators a Cheap Path to Very High Energy Protons?

Nature, 1968
There is considerable interest in a Russian proposal for a machine in which small electron rings containing trapped protons are accelerated to high energies in a linear accelerator. The idea holds out the possibility of very high accelerating rates, and—hopefully—a relatively cheap and compact accelerator for ultrahigh energies.
