Programmed Fabrication of Vesicle‐Based Prototissue Fibers with Modular Functionalities

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Multicellular organisms have hierarchical structures where multiple cells collectively form tissues with complex 3D architectures and exhibit higher‐order functions.

On the surface tension of fluctuating quasi-spherical vesicles [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2010
We calculate the stress tensor for a quasi-spherical vesicle and we thermally average it in order to obtain the actual, mechanical, surface tension $\tau$ of the vesicle. Both closed and poked vesicles are considered. We recover our results for $\tau$ by differentiating the free-energy with respect to the proper projected area.

Flocculation of vesicles

open access: yes, 2011
The flocculation of liposomes is theoretically studied. An expression for the flocculation activation energy is derived, accounting for the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions as well as for the correlation area of floc-spots.

The atypical KRASQ22K mutation directs TGF‐β response towards partial epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in patient‐derived colorectal cancer tumoroids

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TGF‐β has a complex role in cancer, exhibiting both tumor‐suppressive and tumor‐promoting properties. Using a series of differentiated tumoroids, derived from different stages and mutational background of colorectal cancer patients, we replicate this duality of TGF‐β in vitro. Notably, the atypical but highly aggressive KRASQ22K mutation rendered early‐

Unraveling How Antimicrobial Lipid Mixtures Disrupt Virus-Mimicking Lipid Vesicles: A QCM-D Study

open access: yesBiomimetics
Single-chain lipid amphiphiles such as fatty acids and monoglycerides are promising antimicrobial alternatives to replace industrial surfactants for membrane-enveloped pathogen inhibition.

Time, the final frontier

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This article advocates integrating temporal dynamics into cancer research. Rather than relying on static snapshots, researchers should increasingly consider adopting dynamic methods—such as live imaging, temporal omics, and liquid biopsies—to track how tumors evolve over time.

Lipid-Based Catalysis Demonstrated by Bilayer-Enabled Ester Hydrolysis

open access: yesMembranes
Lipids have not traditionally been considered likely candidates for catalyzing reactions in biological systems. However, there is significant evidence that aggregates of amphiphilic compounds are capable of catalyzing reactions in synthetic organic ...

Stokesian jellyfish: Viscous locomotion of bilayer vesicles

open access: yes, 2010
Motivated by recent advances in vesicle engineering, we consider theoretically the locomotion of shape-changing bilayer vesicles at low Reynolds number.

Interplay of integrins and selectins in metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Here we review the role of integrins and their interplay with selectins in metastasis. The efficacy of integrin‐targeted therapies may be reduced in tumors where metastasis relies heavily on selectins. In certain tumors, integrins and selectins exhibit a synergistic interaction during intraperitoneal dissemination.

Fabrication of Porous Collagen Scaffolds Containing Embedded Channels with Collagen Membrane Linings

open access: yesMicromachines
Tissues and organs contain an extracellular matrix (ECM). In the case of blood vessels, endothelium cells are anchored to a specialized basement membrane (BM) embedded inside the interstitial matrix (IM).
