Sting morphology of the European hornet, Vespa crabro L., (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) re‐examined

, 2020
The European hornet Vespa crabro L. (Hymenoptera: Aculeata: Vespidae) is considered the largest native vespid wasp in Europe. The females use their sting to defend themselves and the colony. Despite a long history of research, the morphology of the sting

Next-generation sequencing of the mitochondrial genome of Dolichovespula panda (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) with a phylogenetic analysis of Vespidae

Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology, 2017
Abstract For the first time the mitochondrial genome of a Dolichovespula species, D. panda Archer (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), was sequenced with a next-generation sequencing approach. The sequenced mitochondrial genome is 17137 bp long and consists of 13 protein-coding, 22 tRNA and two rRNA genes, as well as a partial A + T-rich region.

The Australian social wasps (Hymenoptera : Vespidae).

Australian Journal of Zoology, 1978
The social wasps of Australia are described, together with a few from New Guinea which are allied to the Australian ones and contribute to the understanding of their taxonomic position. The larvae and the nesting habits of the wasps are described so far as they are known. Three genera occur in Australia. Vespula with two introduced European species is

Evolution of Social Behavior in the Vespidae

Annual Review of Entomology, 1980
Social wasps have been attracting increasing attention from biologists in recent years, stimulated in part by the development of a body of theory on the origins and evolution of sociality in the Hymenoptera. The purpose of the present review is to examine the social behavior of the Vespidae and to discuss the features that appear to have been important

Taxonomic notes on Vespinae (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

Entomologica Americana, 2015
Abstract Taxonomic notes are provided for several taxa of Vespinae. Vespula austriaca (Panzer, 1799) and Vespula infernalis (de Saussure, 1854) can be distinguished by the sculpturing on the frons in the queen. Vespula yunlongensis Dong and Wang, 2003, is a synonym of V. flaviceps (Smith, 1870), NEW SYNONYMY, while V.
