The genus Vicia comprises approximately 190 species (ILDIS, 1999), chiefly located in Europe, Asia and North America, extending to temperate South America and tropical East Africa. John Vetch and his trachoma battles

This narration gives a brief account of a British Physician John Vetch (1783–1835) who battled against trachoma largely contracted in the battlefield and had to fight a personal battle in the process. The word ‘ophthalmia’ is used to describe inflammation of the eye especially of the conjunctiva, and is used interchangeably with the word ‘ophthalmitis’

John Vetch and the Egyptian ophthalmia

During the Napoleonic Wars from 1798-1815, severe epidemics of keratoconjunctivitis affected the military and civilian populations of Western Europe. This disease was known as the Egyptian ophthalmia because it was first described in troops stationed in Egypt.

The time required for each of 50 honeybees to forage from a hairy vetch blossom, and the time required for each bee that tripped blossoms to trip a different blossom was measured three times each in two fields. There were highly significant differences in the speed with which bees tripped and foraged from blossoms in the two fields.
