Impact of bridge‐specific manufacturing conditions on fatigue of welded joints

open access: yesSteel Construction, Volume 18, Issue 2, Page 89-98, May 2025.
Abstract Box girders with steel cantilevers are often used in the design of composite steel bridges. The welded joints between the main girder and the transverse system are exposed to fatigue loading. Manual welds are common for which the manufacturing conditions can vary in terms of welding position and environmental settings. It is therefore intended

Comparability of Fatigue Strength and Life Estimation of a CF‐PEKK Composite Under Low and Ultrasonic Frequencies Using Time‐Temperature‐Based Approaches

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 48, Issue 5, Page 2363-2380, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Predicting very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) life in composites is challenging due to the lengthy testing times required by traditional methods. Ensuring compatibility between VHCF and high cycle fatigue (HCF) data presents an additional challenge.

VHCF Behavior of Welded Joints with HFMI Treatment under Moisture Conditions

open access: yesWelding Journal, 2022
Fatigue tests of cruciform welded joints made of Q355B steel at very-high-cycle fatigue (VHCF) regimes were carried out on as-welded specimens using high-frequency mechanical impact (HFMI) treatment in dry air and water-spray environments, respectively. The influence of the environment on fatigue life was more obvious in the VHCF regime.

Assessing the Very High Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Frequency Effect of Structural Steel Welds

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 48, Issue 4, Page 1529-1541, April 2025.
ABSTRACT The very high cycle fatigue behavior of S275J2+N flux‐core arc welded joints was investigated using the ultrasonic fatigue testing method at a loading frequency of 20 kHz. A bespoke specimen design featuring the weld toe was employed to more suitably represent in‐service welded joints than typical ultrasonic fatigue testing specimens.

Comparative Fatigue Analysis of Structural Steels Considering Welding and Surface Effects

open access: yesStrain, Volume 61, Issue 2, April 2025.
ABSTRACT There are limited data on the very high‐cycle fatigue for structural steel welds for over 10 million cycles. The purpose of this research is a fatigue performance comparison of the welds made of steels S355JR+AR and S275JR+AR. The goal of reaching the gigacycle fatigue domain is achieved using the ultrasonic fatigue testing at 20 kHz.

Fatigue Design Curves for Industrial Applications: A Review

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 48, Issue 3, Page 1001-1021, March 2025.
ABSTRACT In the present paper, a review on the design curves for safe–life fatigue design is provided. The methodologies available in the literature for the assessment of the strain–life and stress–life design curves have been analyzed, focusing also on the industrial practice for the design of critical components.

A Review on Fatigue Characteristics of Nickel‐Aluminum Bronze (NAB): Conventionally Fabricated and Additively Manufactured

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 48, Issue 2, Page 535-565, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Nickel‐aluminum bronze (NAB) is extensively utilized across various industries, particularly marine applications due to its exceptional corrosion resistance. The mechanical properties of NAB are highly dynamic, and influenced by factors such as manufacturing processes, operating environments, and microstructure.

Very High Cycle Fatigue Life of Free-Spanning Subsea Pipeline Subjected to Vortex-Induced Vibrations

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Free-spanning subsea pipelines subjected to vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) are particularly prone to fatigue failure. Existing flume observations indicated that the VIVs of a near-bed cylinder may be triggered effectively in moderate shear flows.
