AMBIENT VIBRATIONAL ANALYSIS OF AURELIANA COLUMN

The results of ambient vibration survey of Aureliana Column in Rome are shown. The objective of this analysis was the characterization of the dynamic behavior of the monument and the comparison with the results obtained with similar studies about 30 years ago, but with older instruments and data analysis methods.

The Hanging Column as a Dynamic Vibration Absorber

A simple mass–spring system with an attached hanging column is investigated. The problem is formulated and the frequencies obtained with an efficient initial value method. Under forced vibration, the amplitude of the mass may be greatly reduced by adding a hanging column.

Studies of columns of beads under external vibrations

As a toy model for dissipative granular materials, we investigate a one-dimensional column of beads undergoing external vibrations. The analysis is both experimental and numerical. We display the crossover from a condensed to a fluidized state of the column; the parameters are the agitation, the number of beads, and the momentum restitution coefficient.
