Mitigation of Wind-Induced Vibration with Liquid Column Vibration Absorber
Advances in Science and Technology, 2008Increasing heights of tall buildings often require supplementary damping system for occupant comfort in windy condition. This paper presents a liquid column vibration absorber (LCVA) installed in a 64-story building, which is the highest residential building with flat plate structural system in Korea, for mitigation of wind-induced motion.

Estimation of Vibration Response of a Bridge Column
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2019Moving vehicle on a bridge is considered as a moving load and the bridge structure is considered as a continuous beam. Due to the moving position of a vehicle on the bridge, the reaction on each column may be changed. This reaction is time variant for each column. The time-variant reaction is the major accountable factor in the generation of vibrations

While the vibrating strings of guitars and violins are plainly visible, the sound that they produce in air is invisible. We often associate sound with air because we are used to hearing sounds that reach our ears from the air. We also learn that in the absence of air, sound cannot propagate – movies with sound propagating in outer space, not ...

Power dissipation in a vibrating disc column
The Chemical Engineering Journal, 1979Abstract The power dissipation in a vibrating disc column of 17.2 cm inside diameter has been measured in a liquid single-phase system and in a gas—liquid two-phase system. For frequencies less than 5 Hz, the power dissipation in the column is mainly controlled by the maximum drag force exerted on the vibrating disc at the maximum velocity of disc ...

A note on vibration of beam-columns
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1986Abstract Eigenfrequencies for beam-columns with flexible supports are determined by a unified equation which includes all classical, idealized boundary conditions as special cases. For the approximation of linear dependence between squared eigenfrequency and column load, good agreement is found when the supports are translationally fixed, but slight ...

Response of a Column in Random Vibration Tests
Journal of the Structural Division, 1975Laboratory experiments were conducted to observe and measure the response amplitude and frequency of a simply supported column. The column was excited by axial forces generated from sinusoidal and random (bandwidths of 3 Hz, 10 Hz, 30 Hz, and 100 Hz) signals.

Sound waves consist of regular variations of pressure transmitted from particle to particle through a medium. These changes of pressure are set up by the vibrations of the source. The regularity of the variations (considering a musical note as distinct from noise) means that a condition of high pressure, called a compression will be followed by a ...

Vibration of a Segmented Heavy Column
Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, 2010The vibration of a standing (or hanging) segmented column, affected by its own weight, is studied. The governing difference equations are solved numerically. The results tend to those of the continuous column as the number of segments tends to infinity.

Hydrophone Calibration in a Vibrating Column of Liquid
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1962Absolute pressure calibrations of hydrophones have been performed in the laboratory by immersing the hydrophone in a column of liquid set into vibration. Sound pressures of over 1000 dyne/cm2 can easily be obtained. Various limitations on the procedure, such as those due to fluid motion around the hydrophone, and wave effects in the liquid column are ...

Vibrations of the Reed and the Air Column in the Clarinet
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1961The vibrations of an artificially blown clarinet were studied by a photoelectric method in which light from a source placed at the bell of the instrument passed through the aperture between the reed and the mouthpiece and into a photomultiplier tube whose output was observed on an oscilloscope.
