Constraints on the deformation of the vibrissa within the follicle

open access: yesPLOS Computational Biology, 2020
Nearly all mammals have a vibrissal system specialized for tactile sensation, composed of whiskers growing from sensor-rich follicles in the skin. When a whisker deflects against an object, it deforms within the follicle and exerts forces on the mechanoreceptors inside.

Human density negatively affects nitrogen enrichment of coyote vibrissae.

open access: yes, 2020
The density of humans in the buffer zone around a coyote vibrissae collection site and the δ15N signature of the vibrissae. Solid black line represents a linear best-fit model.

Amputation of Vibrissae in Show Dogs [PDF]

open access: yes, 1980
Dogs of many different breeds competing in the show-ring are routinely subjected to amputation of the vibrissae, organs that are commonly and incorrectly called whiskers.

Evidence for Functional Groupings of Vibrissae across the Rodent Mystacial Pad. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology, 2016
During natural exploration, rats exhibit two particularly conspicuous vibrissal-mediated behaviors: they follow along walls, and "dab" their snouts on the ground at frequencies related to the whisking cycle.

Vibrissa mechanical properties

open access: yesScholarpedia, 2015
The vibrissal (whisker) array of the rodent has been an important model for the study of active touch and tactile perception for over a century (Richardson 1909; Vincent 1912). During exploratory behaviors many rodents brush and tap their whiskers against surfaces to tactually extract object features, similar in some ways to how humans use their ...

The quality factor Q for seal vibrissae and rat vibrissae in air.

open access: yes, 2013
Q is about three times larger for seal vibrissae than for rat vibrissae.

Impaired learning-dependent cortical plasticity in Huntington's disease transgenic mice

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2004
Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetically transmitted neurodegenerative disorder. The neuropathology in HD is a selective neuronal cell death in several brain regions including cortex.

The Transcriptional Regulator Prdm1 Is Essential for the Early Development of the Sensory Whisker Follicle and Is Linked to the Beta-Catenin First Dermal Signal

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2022
Prdm1 mutant mice are one of the rare mutant strains that do not develop whisker hair follicles while still displaying a pelage. Here, we show that Prdm1 is expressed at the earliest stage of whisker development in clusters of mesenchymal cells before ...
