Growth Rates of Vibrissae of Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina) and Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias jubatus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Growth rates of vibrissae (whiskers), which act as a temporal record of feeding in harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), were estimated using 13C- and 15N-labeled glycine followed by stable-isotope analysis.

Treatment With Nimodipine or FK506 After Facial Nerve Repair Neither Improves Accuracy of Reinnervation Nor Recovery of Mimetic Function in Rats

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2022
PurposeNimodipine and FK506 (Tacrolimus) are drugs that have been reported to accelerate peripheral nerve regeneration. We therefore tested these substances aiming to improve the final functional outcome of motoric reinnervation after facial nerve injury.

Integrative revision of the Australian carrion‐breeding Calliphorinae (Diptera: Calliphoridae): Revision of the Calliphora stygia‐ and ochracea‐groups

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
The Australian carrion‐breeding Calliphorinae are revised using an integrative approach combining morphology and mitogenomics. A new taxonomic key, morphological images and verified mitogenomic data, including COX1 barcodes, are provided to support the identification of species.

Understanding Exosomes in Hair Regeneration

open access: yesPeriodontology 2000, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Alopecia is a prevalent condition correlated with significant psychosocial challenges, while contemporary treatments exhibit variable efficacy, require extended use, and may cause adverse effects. This review aimed to comprehensively assess exosome‐mediated interventions as a novel cell‐free regenerative approach for hair ...

Mechanical signals at the base of a rat vibrissa: the effect of intrinsic vibrissa curvature and implications for tactile exploration

open access: yesJournal of Neurophysiology, 2012
Rats actively tap and sweep their large mystacial vibrissae (whiskers) against objects to tactually explore their surroundings. When a vibrissa makes contact with an object, it bends, and this bending generates forces and bending moments at the vibrissa base. Researchers have only recently begun to quantify these mechanical variables.

Comparison of conjunctival pedicle flap to corneal fixation strength achieved by Tisseel® fibrin glue, ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive, ReSure® hydrogel sealant, and conventional suturing with 8‐0 VICRYL® ophthalmic suture

open access: yesVeterinary Ophthalmology, Volume 28, Issue 2, Page 253-263, March 2025.
Abstract Objective To determine and compare the fixation strength of conjunctival pedicle flaps to cornea achieved via conventional ophthalmic suture and three different adhesive compounds. Animals Studied Ex vivo porcine globes. Procedures Following a 6 mm wide 500‐micron‐restricted depth lamellar keratectomy, conjunctival pedicle flaps were secured ...

Neuronal plasticity in the nigrostriatal system of the rat after unilateral removal of vibrissae [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
The vibrissae of rats were shaved from one side of the face daily for 10 days. To see whether or not this treatment had an effect on crossed and uncrossed striatal afferent connections from the midbrain, the tract tracer horseradish peroxidase was ...

Scaling temporal resolution from mice to humans: Challenges and innovations in preclinical imaging of translational models

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Temporal scaling physiology differs significantly between mice and humans. Mice have higher metabolism, heart and respiratory rate, as well as faster blood flow rates, brain activity and physiological dynamics over time. These differences influence the temporal resolution needed in preclinical imaging of mouse models to ...

Effects of Multi-Point Contacts during Object Contour Scanning Using a Biologically-Inspired Tactile Sensor

open access: yesSensors, 2020
Vibrissae are an important tactile sense organ of many mammals, in particular rodents like rats and mice. For instance, these animals use them in order to detect different object features, e.g., object-distances and -shapes.

E3 Ubiquitin Ligase NEDD4‐Mediated CTSB Ubiquitination Prevents Microglial Ferroptosis After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

open access: yesJournal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology, Volume 40, Issue 10, October 2026.
NEDD4 attenuates secondary brain injury after SAH by ubiquitinating and degrading CTSB, thereby inhibiting microglial ferroptosis. ABSTRACT To investigate the role of cathepsin B (CTSB) in microglial ferroptosis after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and its upstream regulatory mechanisms.
