Traveling vibrotactile wave - a new vibrotactile rendering method for mobile devices
IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 2009The use of a vibration motor is recently receiving attention for haptic interaction with mobile devices. An important aspect of haptic interaction using the vibration motor in mobile devices is to compute and to generate vibrotactile information in response to user's input.

Autoencoder for Vibrotactile Signal Compression
ICASSP 2021 - 2021 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2021Vibrotactile signals contain rich haptic information about textured surfaces but their large data volume makes it a challenging task to transmit such signals to remote locations to create immersive and realistic user experiences. Inspired by the recent success of deep neural network (DNN) based autoencoder, we make the first attempt to apply ...

Incidental Categorization of Vibrotactile Stimuli
IEEE Transactions on Haptics, 2020Past research has demonstrated incidental learning of task-irrelevant visual and auditory stimuli. Motivated by the possibility of similar evidence in the tactile domain and potential applications in tactile speech communication systems, we investigated incidental categorization of vibrotactile stimuli through a visuomotor task of shape identification.

Vibrotactile masking through the body
Experimental Brain Research, 2014Touches on one hand or forearm can affect tactile sensitivity at contralateral locations on the opposite side of the body. These interactions suggest an intimate connection between the two sides of the body. Here, we explore the effect of masking not across the body but through the body by measuring the effect of a masking stimulus on the back on the ...

Prediction of vibrotactile masking functions
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1982Threshold shifts for the detection of vibrotactile test stimuli were determined as a function of the intensity of a masker. The masking stimulus, narrow-band noise centered at 275 Hz, and the test stimulus, a 15-, 50-, 80-, or 300-Hz sinusoidal burst, were applied to the same site on the thenar eminence of the hand.

Vibrotactile Emotions on a Mobile Phone
2008 IEEE International Conference on Signal Image Technology and Internet Based Systems, 2008Vibrotactile sensations to sight and sound cues on mobile handsets make content more realistic, fun and operation more intuitive. An intuitive method to render human facial feature for visually impaired is evaluated for effectiveness. In current system, the vibration of a mobile phone is used to provide emotion information based on human lip?s shape ...

British Journal of Occupational Therapy, 1990
Many occupational therapists appear to be struggling to provide a holistic treatment programme for people with multiple handicaps. A number of the accepted methods of therapy or intervention techniques for mental handicap facilitate the individual to learn by handling and manipulating and are thus not so readily accessible to those with multiple ...

Perceptual dimensions of vibrotactile actuators
2018 IEEE Haptics Symposium (HAPTICS), 2018The objective of the present research was to determine how variations in the signals generated by different vibrotactile actuators are perceived and which features are judged as being distinctive. For this purpose, three different types of actuator were used to generate signals that varied in amplitude, waveform and frequency.

Discrimination of Concurrent Vibrotactile Stimuli
2008We investigated the detection of vibrotactile targets against a background of concurrent non-targets, presented by eight tactors equally distributed in a horizontal band around the torso. Stimuli consisted of temporal activation patterns. Single targets (T) were presented among two to seven non-targets (N).

Neural mechanisms in vibrotactile adaptation
Journal of Neurophysiology, 19881. Peripheral and central neural contributions to vibrotactile adaptation were investigated in decerebrate or anesthetized cats by recording from sensory nerve fibers associated with Pacinian corpuscle (PC) receptors and from central neurons of the dorsal column nuclei that receive their input from vibration-sensitive receptors of the forelimb ...
