Vicarious Calibration of the Meteosat Visible Channel
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 1993Abstract Postlaunch calibration of the Meteosat visible (VIS) channel has been performed with Meteosat-1, Meteosat-2, and Meteosat-4. The radiance at the satellite radiometer aperture has been determined by independent means and has been related to the simultaneous satellite radiometer count.

Vicarious calibration of Aqua and Terra MODIS
SPIE Proceedings, 2003The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is onboard both the Terra and Aqua platforms. An important aspect of the use of MODIS, and other Earth Science Enterprise sensors, has been the characterization and calibration of the sensors and validation of their data products.

Ground-monitor radiometer system for vicarious calibration
SPIE Proceedings, 2004The Remote Sensing Group at the University of Arizona has been active in the vicarious calibration of numerous sensors through the use of ground-based test sites. Application of these approaches has been limited in the past by the fact that ground-based personnel must be present at the time of the sensor overpass.

Evaluation of vicarious calibration for airborne sensors using RadCalNet
Journal of Applied Remote Sensing, 2020Vicarious calibration approaches using in-situ measurements are key techniques applied to on-orbit remote sensors. The in-situ measurements have advantages in terms of traceability and quantifiable accuracy that make them ideal for inter-consistency studies of on-orbit sensors.

Bathymetry estimations using vicariously calibrated HICO data
SPIE Proceedings, 2013The Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean (HICO) is a prototype sensor installed on the International Space Station (ISS) designed to explore the management and capability of a space-borne hyperspectral sensor. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) funded the development and management of HICO.

Vicarious calibration of ASTER backward-looking telescope
SPIE Proceedings, 2006The Remote Sensing Group at the University of Arizona has successfully used various vicarious calibration methods for the absolute radiometric calibration of over 13 separate sensors since 2000 including nearly 40 sets of ground-based data collected at large uniform test sites imaged by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer

LED Spectrometer (LSpec) autonomous vicarious calibration facility
SPIE Proceedings, 2007A new method of performing vicarious calibration of Visible-Near Infrared (VNIR) sensors has been developed which does not require the manual efforts of a field team to capture surface and atmospheric measurements. Instead, an array of unattended sensors captures the required data on a near continuous basis for recording to a web-based retrieval system.

Vicarious calibration of ASTER thermal infrared bands
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2005The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra satellite has five bands in the thermal infrared (TIR) spectral region between 8-12 /spl mu/m. The TIR bands have been regularly validated in-flight using ground validation targets.

Multiple vicarious calibration using combined accuracy estimation
SPIE Proceedings, 2010Radiometric calibration often employs several independent vicarious calibration techniques to increase robustness and accuracy. We present a statistical methodology for combining results in a hierarchical scheme. The method, developed for the PROBA-V remote sensing mission, is based on handling and propagating of accuracies in accordance with the ISO ...

Initial results of the FLARE vicarious calibration network
Earth Observing Systems XXV, 2020The SPecular Array Radiometric Calibration (SPARC) methodology uses convex mirrors to relay an image of the sun to a satellite, airborne sensor, or other Earth Observation platform. The signal created by SPARC can be used to derive absolute, traceable calibration coefficients of Earth remote sensing systems in the solar reflective spectrum.
