Effect of Land‐Use on Hantavirus Infection Among Introduced and Endemic Small Mammals of Madagascar

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Hantaviruses are globally distributed zoonotic pathogens capable of causing fatal disease in humans. Addressing the risk of hantavirus spillover from animal reservoirs to humans requires identifying the local reservoirs (usually rodents and other small ...

Viral ecology of a shallow eutrophic lake.

open access: yes, 2007
This thesis aims to give an insight into the ecology of the viral community in a shallow eutrophic lake. To achieve this, the population dynamics, diversity and control of the viral community in Lake Loosdrecht were studied, as well as the impact of the viral community on plankton mortality and community composition. A seasonal study of Lake Loosdrecht

Bioactive compounds in insects—Composition, extraction, functionality, food applications, and safety concerns

open access: yesFood Biomacromolecules, EarlyView.
This review synthesizes 94 studies (2000–2025) exploring edible insects as sustainable sources of peptides, lipids, and chitin. Utilizing “green” extraction, these bioactives offer antioxidant and antimicrobial benefits for functional foods. However, addressing safety concerns like allergenicity and heavy metals through standardized frameworks remains ...

Viral ecology of lakes : a descriptive and ecological study of viruses that infect phytoplankton

open access: yes, 2008
Since the 'discovery' of the high abundance of viruses in aquatic environments, it has been generally assumed that viruses in lakes are similar to those in oceans. I directly compared these two systems using a large, robust data set. Viral abundance was significantly different among the surveyed environments.
