The dictionary of virology [PDF]

open access: yesThe Lancet Infectious Diseases, 2009
Recently we have witnessed an explosion in virus discovery. The highest profi le of these “new” viruses is the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, which made its debut in 2001 with an alarming pandemic that infected 8000 people around the world and claimed 800 victims before it was brought under control.

Insights into the morphology‐productivity relationship of filamentous fungi through small‐scale cultivation and automated microscopy of Thermothelomyces thermophilus

open access: yesBiotechnology Progress, EarlyView.
Abstract Filamentous fungi are a cornerstone in the biotechnological production of enzymes, proteins, and organic acids. However, challenges in understanding and controlling the relationship between morphology and productivity can limit their application.

IL‐4/IL‐13‐producing ILC2s are required for timely control of intestinal helminth infection in mice

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 52, Issue 12, Page 1925-1933, December 2022., 2022
ILC2‐derived IL‐4/IL‐13 plays a non‐redundant role for eosinophil recruitment to the lung and expulsion of N. brasiliensis worm parasites from the intestine. Abstract Infection of mice with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nb) serves as a model for human hookworm infection affecting about 600 million people world‐wide.

A method for facile production of variable lymphocyte receptors using SHuffle Escherichia coli

open access: yesBiotechnology Progress, EarlyView.
Abstract Variable lymphocyte receptors (VLRs) are the antigen receptors of jawless vertebrates such as lamprey. VLRs are of growing biotechnological interest for their ability to bind certain antigenic targets with higher affinity than traditional immunoglobulins.

The thioredoxin system: Balancing redox responses in immune cells and tumors

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 53, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
The thioredoxin (TRX) system is a critical contributor to cellular redox homeostasis in all living cells. Here, we review the key roles of TRX for activation, proliferation, and responses in T cells, B cells, and myeloid cells. Further, we conceptualize how this knowledge may be therapeutically exploited for cancer treatment.

Giant viruses in the oceans : the 4th Algal Virus Workshop [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2005
Giant double-stranded DNA viruses (such as record breaking Acanthamoeba polyphaga Mimivirus), with particle sizes of 0.2 to 0.6 micron, genomes of 300 kbp to 1.200 kbp, and commensurate complex gene contents, constitute an evolutionary mystery. They challenge the common vision of viruses, traditionally seen as highly streamlined genomes optimally ...

Pre‐folding purification procedures for inclusion body‐derived non‐tagged cationic recombinant proteins with multiple disulfide bonds for efficient refolding

open access: yesBiotechnology Progress, EarlyView.
Abstract The production of disulfide‐containing recombinant proteins often requires refolding of inclusion bodies before purification. A pre‐refolding purification step is crucial for effective refolding because impurities in the inclusion bodies interfere with refolding and subsequent purification.

IL‐13 determines specific IgE responses and SARS‐CoV‐2 immunity after mild COVID‐19 and novel mRNA vaccination

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 52, Issue 12, Page 1972-1979, December 2022., 2022
To investigate atopic immune reactions in response to SARS‐CoV‐2 mRNA vaccinations or mild infections serum IgE and cytokines were analyzed. An atopic environment prone to reactions against aeroallergens was revealed in convalescents but not vaccinated.

Formalization of malware through process calculi [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2009
Since the seminal work from F. Cohen in the eighties, abstract virology has seen the apparition of successive viral models, all based on Turing-equivalent formalisms. But considering recent malware such as rootkits or k-ary codes, these viral models only partially cover these evolved threats.

A design space for the filtration of challenging monoclonal antibodies using Planova™ S20N, a new regenerated cellulose virus removal filter

open access: yesBiotechnology Progress, EarlyView.
Abstract Virus removal by filtration is a crucial step in ensuring the safety of therapeutic antibodies and other biopharmaceutical products by mitigating the risk of endogenous and adventitious viral contamination. However, there are monoclonal antibodies (mAb) that are difficult to filter effectively using virus removal filters (i.e., challenging ...
