Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

Association of life-space mobility with physical and depressive status in older hemodialysis patients: the REPnet-HD study

open access: yesRenal Replacement Therapy
Introduction Low physical function and depressive symptoms are frequent in older patients undergoing hemodialysis. This study aimed to investigate the association between life-space mobility (LSM), low physical function, and depressive symptoms in older ...

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Virtual Bronchoscopy

open access: yesInternational Journal of Virtual Reality, 2000
Patients potentially suffer and are exposed to danger during invasive bronchoscopic diagnosis and surgery. In order to reduce this hazardous risk, we have developed an interactive virtual environment for the simulation of bronchoscopy (in short, called "virtual bronchoscopy"). Because of this state-of-the-art application, medical doctors can now obtain

A Simplified Laminar Flow Model for the Pultrusion of Glass Fiber/Polyethylene Terephthalate Commingled Yarns

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A simplified thermoplastic pultrusion model is developed to predict thermal fields in glass fiber/polyethylene terephthalate (GF/PET) composites with reduced computational cost. By combining effective material homogenization, validation against literature data, and Gaussian‐process‐based optimization, the study reveals how heating limits, pulling speed,

APPLICATIONS AND FUTURE PROSPECTS OF GENETIC ENGINEERING: A NEW GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

open access: yesFUUAST Journal of Biology, 2016
Genetic engineering (GE) is often termed as gene manipulation or recombinant DNA technology with all three often used interchangeably--implying to the manipulation and alteration of the genetic make-up of an organism through introduction of certain ...

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

From Virtual Environment to Virtual Community [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We discuss a virtual reality theater environment and its transition to a virtual community by adding domain agents and by allowing multiple users to visit this environment. The environment has been built using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). We discuss how our ideas about this environment changed in time by adding more facilities to it and by
