Time-frequency analysis of virtual cathode oscillator
2009 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference, 2009Time-frequency analysis has been carried out for microwave radiation from a virtual cathode oscillator. The results have given clear evidence of mode hopping and frequency shifting. The dependence of mode competition on the diode operation parameters is also identified.

A Radially and Axially Extracted Virtual-Cathode Oscillator (Vircator)
IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 1985Experiments are described in which a 5-? 1-MeV pulser drives virtual-cathode systems optimized to emit microwave radiation in the X band. Radiation is extracted both axially in TM modes and radially in TE modes. The threshold for microwave emission is found to be several times the space-charge limited current.

Dynamics of a virtual cathode oscillator driven by a pinched diode
The Physics of Fluids, 1986A new method is demonstrated for extracting radiation from a virtual cathode oscillator in transverse electric (TE) waveguide modes. The dominant radiation mechanism occurs in the region of the virtual cathode, and is not due to reflexing of electrons. Microwave radiation occurs simultaneously or just after beam pinching in the diode.

Experimental results from a coaxial virtual cathode oscillator

Tenth IEEE International Pulsed Power Conference, 2002The coaxial vircator generates microwave radiation by injecting a radial electron beam into a cylinder such that the space-charge limit of the region is exceeded. A virtual cathode forms and oscillates in radial position and amplitude, generating microwaves which are extracted through an attached waveguide with a circular cross-section.
