Navigating large virtual spaces
International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, 1996As important as navigation is to human performance in virtual worlds, it is an often overlooked problem in the design process. This article reports an experiment intended to show that real‐world wayfinding and environmental design principles are effective in designing virtual worlds that support skilled wayfinding behavior.

Contributions of Proprioception to Navigation in Virtual Environments
Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 1998Users immersed in virtual environments (VEs) are prone to disorientation and have difficulty transferring spatial knowledge to the real world. A single experiment investigated the contribution of inadequate proprioception to this problem by providing participants with interfaces to a virtual environment that either did (a walking interface) or did not (

Is semitransparency useful for navigating virtual environments?
Proceedings of the ACM symposium on Virtual reality software and technology, 2001A relevant issue for any Virtual Environment (VE) is the navigational support provided to users who are exploring it. Semitransparency is sometimes exploited as a means to see through occluding surfaces with the aim of improving user navigation abilities and awareness of the VE structure.

Navigating Ecosystem Virtuality
2023Addressing future challenges by means of innovation requires organizations to work together to a much larger degree than today, requiring both physical (‘colocated’) and digital collaboration. This collaboration for innovation often goes beyond single organizations and results in networks of shared value creation comprising different actors such as ...

A Virtual Laboratory on satellite-based navigation
Control Engineering Practice, 2001A primary objective in the development of a navigation system is to test the effectiveness of its algorithms together with their capability of operating in real time. With this in mind a Virtual Laboratory capable of simulating the main features of general aviation aircraft navigational sensors together with their interface to the on-board computer has

Guided navigation of virtual environments
Proceedings of the 1995 symposium on Interactive 3D graphics - SI3D '95, 1995This paper presents a new methodology for navigating virtual environments called “The River Analogy.” This analogy provides a new way of thinking about the user's relationship to the virtual environment; guiding the user's continuous and direct input within both space and time allowing a more narrative presentation.

Mining Navigation Patterns in a Virtual Campus
2012 Third International Conference on Emerging Intelligent Data and Web Technologies, 2012The web designers of Virtual Campuses or web applications, in general, targeting a large number of online users aim to facilitate the navigation of users through the site content. Qualitative and quantitative studies can support web designers by providing information on users' profiles, interest on site content, etc.

Navigation in Virtual Environments
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2001Spatial orientation in a Virtual Environment (VE) depends on visual recognition and on path integration meaning that the traversed path is integrated from feedback stimuli (visual, vestibular, and kinesthetic). Which stimuli are available, depends on whether an immersive interface is used with head-slaved movement or a non-immersive interface is used ...

Virtual reality navigation system in virtual mall environment
Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Communication and Information Processing, 2017The mall is a shopping center that contains a variety of retail stores and typically also restaurants or movie theater. Therefore, the building has large size and sometimes made people get confused to find a place or destination at the mall. The existing solution to this problem is to provide navigation in the mall such as directions, information ...

Attentive camera navigation in virtual environments
SMC 2000 Conference Proceedings. 2000 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics. 'Cybernetics Evolving to Systems, Humans, Organizations, and their Complex Interactions' (Cat. No.00CH37166), 2002Gaining an accurate mental representation of real environments and realistic virtual environments is a gradual process. Significant aspects of an environment may be obvious to a trained expert, but not to the novice trainee. If a user does not know where to look, he or she may concentrate on irrelevant objects. This detracts from learning the locations
