Data modeling for the virtual observatory

Astronomy and Computing, 2015
Abstract The data modeling effort has played a key role in the Virtual Observatory project, and contributed to the effort to build a common reference framework to describe the necessary information attached to astronomical data: the metadata. Such metadata describe the observing parameters and characterize and qualify the observed measurements. These

AstroGrid and the Virtual Observatory

Lecture Notes in Physics, 2009
This chapter gives a brief introduction to the Virtual Observatory (VO). It looks in some detail at the UK’s AstroGrid Virtual Observatory implementation, showing, via a range of science examples, how the “Virtual Observatory” can be of use to astronomers for a wide variety of data discovery and analysis tasks.

Serbian virtual observatory

Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Computer Systems and Technologies, 2012
The work on SerVO - Serbian virtual observatory (http://servo.aob.rs/~darko) started in 2008, with aims 1) To establish SerVO and join the EuroVO - European Virtual Observatory and IVOA - Inetrnational Virtual Observatory Alliance; 2) To create SerVO data Center for digitalization and archiving in VO format photo-plates from Belgrade Astronomical ...

Chilean virtual observatory

2015 Latin American Computing Conference (CLEI), 2015
This paper presents the challenges, architecture and current status of the Chilean Virtual Observatory (ChiVO), which is a software infrastructure for accessing and processing astronomical data generated in Chile. As ChiVO is part of the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA), we strictly follow the protocols and standards that this ...

Virtual observatory standards in action

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
Interoperability in Virtual Observatories is based on standards for interchange formats, and protocols. Using real science cases, we present example VO tools based on the AVO prototypes and the CDS services, which implement the new and emerging VO standards.

Mobile applications and Virtual Observatory

Astronomy and Computing, 2015
Abstract Within a few years, smartphones and Internet tablets have become the devices to access Web or standalone applications from everywhere, with a rapid development of the bandwidth of the mobile networks (e.g. 4G). Internet tablets are used to take notes during meetings or conferences, to read scientific papers in public transportation, etc.

INTEGRAL as Virtual Observatory

Nuclear Physics B - Proceedings Supplements, 2007
We refer on the efforts to develop alternative access to the data gained by the ESA gamma-ray INTEGRAL satellite based on the idea of the virtual observatory. The motivation and the related methods and procedures are briefly presented and discussed.

Chilean Virtual Observatory and integration with ALMA

SPIE Proceedings, 2014
The Virtual Observatories strive to interoperate, exchange data and share services as if it was only one big VO. In this work, the state of the art of VOs will be presented and summarized in a schematic diagram with the frequency range of the observed data that every VO publishes.

Using the Virtual Observatory

This is a course on using the Virtual Observatory (VO), an international research data infrastructure in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Starting with a brief discussion of some general concepts, it introduces some of the major client programs like TOPCAT and Aladin, together with some simple discovery protocols.
