Digital Data Preservation for Scholarly Publications in Astronomy

open access: yesInternational Journal of Digital Curation, 2008
Astronomy is similar to other scientific disciplines in that scholarly publication relies on the presentation and interpretation of data. But although astronomy now has archives for its primary research telescopes and associated surveys, the highly ...

Exploring the legal, policy, ethical and practical implications of digitisation of botanical and fungal collections

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Societal Impact Statement Dried plant and fungal specimens held in collections provide a unique asset to understand the natural world and inform conservation approaches. By creating freely available, digital images of these collections, these specimens can be used by more scientists from around the globe to ask research questions and apply new ...

Evaluating anisotropy‐based Monin–Obukhov similarity theory over canopies and complex terrain

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study shows that an anisotropy‐based generalization of Monin–Obukhov surface‐layer scaling (SC23) applies readily across a wide range of atmospheric conditions with variable terrain, canopies, and land‐cover complexity. This work focuses on the scaling of velocity variances for 7 years at the 47 sites in the National Ecological Observation Network

Scalable low‐cost seabed landers: the missing link for sustained, integrated, long‐term observations in dynamic shallow seas

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Seabed landers, when equipped with a range of biotic and abiotic sensors, offer a non‐invasive and cost‐effective solution for ecosystem‐scale monitoring of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) in dynamic shallow seas.

Do Single‐Sex STEM Programs Have Merit? If So, for Whom, on What Measures?

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Single‐sex STEM programs—defined here as voluntary, gender‐segregated extracurricular or supplemental activities (e.g., summer camps, workshops, robotics clubs, internships, or citizen science initiatives)—have experienced heightened popularity and scrutiny amid efforts to increase diversity in STEM fields.

Critical Success Factors and a Modus Operandi Framework for Managing Multi‐Actor Research Partnerships for Sustainable Food Systems

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates critical success factors for managing multi‐actor research partnerships for sustainable food systems along their lifecycle. Such partnerships coordinate both internal activities and manage externally funded projects. Drawing on evidence from case studies and workshops with diverse experts, the study identifies critical ...

The XinJiang Astronomical Observatory NSRT Pulsar Data Archive

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, 2019
The sensitivity of our pulsar observation system with typical integration time of 16 minutes has reached 0.4 mJy after we have upgraded the receiver cooling system of NanShan 25-m radio telescope (NSRT) at Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory (XAO) in 2002.

Model‐Based Systems Engineering in Space Applications: A Comprehensive Literature Review

open access: yesSystems Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The growing complexity of space engineering is driving the demand to embrace the adoption of Model‐Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). Although the MBSE is well‐practiced in the space industry, the level of effort and need required to obtain the benefits of MBSE vastly differ across enterprises; this disparity presents a significant challenge to
