Virtual Reality: A Definition History - A Personal Essay [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
This essay, written in 1998 by an active participant in both virtual reality development and the virtual reality definition debate, discusses the definition of the phrase "Virtual Reality" (VR). I start with history from a personal perspective, concentrating on the debate between the "Virtual Reality" and "Virtual Environment" labels in the late 1980's

Wearable Haptic Feedback Interfaces for Augmenting Human Touch

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The wearable haptic feedback interfaces enhance user experience in gaming, social media, biomedical instrumentation, and robotics by generating tactile sensations. This review discusses and categorizes current haptic feedback interfaces into force, thermal, and electrotactile stimulation‐based haptic feedback interfaces, elucidating their current ...

Virtual reality

open access: yes, 2016
An artificial environment created with computer hardwareand software and presented to the user in such a way that itappears and feels like a real environment. To "enter" avirtual reality, a user does special gloves, earphones, andgoggles, all of which receive their input from the computersystem.

Focusing 3D Small Objects with Object Matching Set Abstraction

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Currently, 3D object detection methods fail to detect small objects due to the fewer effective points of small objects. It is a significant challenge to reduce the loss of information of points in representation learning.

Off‐Stoichiometry Engineering of the Electrical and Optical Properties of SrNbO3 Using Oxide Molecular Beam Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The plasma edge of transparent conducting oxide SrNbO3 shifts from ∼2 eV in the visible range to 1.37 eV in the near‐infrared region by off‐stoichiometry using the vacancy sites as quasi‐substitutional virtual elements. This work advances the stoichiometry engineering of perovskite oxides using oxide molecular beam epitaxy, allowing synthesis beyond ...

Virtual Reality Is Sexist: But It Does Not Have to Be

open access: yesFrontiers in Robotics and AI, 2020
The aim of this study was to assess what drives gender-based differences in the experience of cybersickness within virtual environments. In general, those who have studied cybersickness (i.e., motion sickness associated with virtual reality [VR] exposure)

Shape‐Reconfigurable Crack‐Based Strain Sensor with Ultrahigh and Tunable Sensitivity

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A highly sensitive crack‐based sensor with tunable strain detection capabilities is demonstrated through controlled nanocrack formation in a line‐patterned shape memory polymer substrate. The sensor design integrates thermoplastic polyurethane and poly(lactic acid), enabling thermo‐responsive reconfiguration of crack geometry.
