The recently-developed nested neutral-point clamped (NNPC) converter is a four-level converter for medium-voltage high-power applications. It has some merits such as operating over wide voltage ranges (2.4-7.2 kV) without switching devices in series and less diodes or capacitors when compared with classical four-level topologies.

In the paper by Xiang et al. ( IEEE Trans. Power Electron ., vol. 33, no. 6, pp. 5452–5464, Jun. 2018), the authors proposed an improved virtual space vector modulation for three-level neutral-point-clamped converter. However, some problems are worth being discussed about vector synthesis of the improved virtual space vector modulation.

A virtual space vector modulation technique reducing both magnitude and third-order harmonic component of the common-mode voltage (CMV) in a two-level voltage-source inverter (VSI) is proposed in this paper. The presented method employs a set of virtual space vectors constructed from original stationary space vectors to conduct modulation.
