Genome Editing of Rice eIF4G Loci Confers Partial Resistance to Rice Black-Streaked Dwarf Virus

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Rice black-streaked dwarf disease, caused by rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV), is a serious constraint in Chinese rice production. Breeding disease-resistant varieties through multigene aggregation is considered an effective way to control ...

Establishing an Immune System Conferring DNA and RNA Virus Resistance in Plants Using CRISPR/Cas12a Multiplex Gene Editing. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Direct
Two types of CRISPR/Cas systems (Cas9 and Cas13) have been used to combat eukaryotic viruses successfully. In this study, we established resistance to the DNA virus BSCTV and RNA virus TMV in Nicotiana benthamiana using the CRISPR‐Cas12a multiplex gene ...

Identification of QTLs for Reduced Susceptibility to Rose Rosette Disease in Diploid Roses

open access: yesPathogens, 2022
Resistance to rose rosette disease (RRD), a fatal disease of roses (Rosa spp.), is a high priority for rose breeding. As RRD resistance is time-consuming to phenotype, the identification of genetic markers for resistance could expedite breeding efforts ...

AZT-resistant foamy virus

open access: yesVirology, 2008
Azidothymidine (AZT) is a reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitor that efficiently blocks the replication of spumaretroviruses or foamy viruses (FVs). To more precisely elucidate the mechanism of action of the FV RT enzyme, we generated an AZT-resistant FV in cell culture.

A Functional Variant in the Aquaporin-3 Promoter Modulates Its Expression and Correlates With Resistance to Porcine Epidemic Virus Infection in Porcine Intestinal Epithelial Cells

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes a highly contagious intestinal disease in neonatal pigs. Aquaporin-3 (AQP3) plays important roles in maintenance of intestinal barrier function and regulation of immune responses.

Nucleic Acid, Antibody, and Virus Culture Methods to Detect Xenotropic MLV-Related Virus in Human Blood Samples

open access: yesAdvances in Virology, 2011
The MLV-related retrovirus, XMRV, was recently identified and reported to be associated with both prostate cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome. At the National Cancer Institute-Frederick, MD (NCI-Frederick), we developed highly sensitive methods to ...

Engineering resistance to virus transmission

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Virology, 2017
Engineering plants for resistance to virus transmission by invertebrate vectors has lagged behind other forms of plant protection. Vectors typically transmit more than one virus. Thus, vector resistance could provide a wider range of protection than defenses directed solely against one virus or virus group.

Herpes simplex virus resistance to antivirals [PDF]

open access: yesVirologie, 2020
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections remain an important cause of morbidity among immunocompromised patients, such as transplant recipients and human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]-infected individuals. Only few antiviral drugs are available to treat HSV infections: (val)acyclovir, foscarnet, and cidofovir. Prophylactic and curative antiviral treatments

Phytohormone Signaling of the Resistance to Plum pox virus (PPV, Sharka Disease) Induced by Almond (Prunus dulcis (Miller) Webb) Grafting to Peach (P. persica L. Batsch)

open access: yesViruses, 2018
Plum pox virus (PPV, sharka) is a limiting factor for peach production, and no natural sources of resistance have been described. Recent studies, however, have demonstrated that grafting the almond cultivar “Garrigues” onto the “GF305” peach infected ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.
