Children grow and horses race: is the adiposity rebound a critical period for later obesity? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
BACKGROUND: The adiposity rebound is the second rise in body mass index that occurs between 3 and 7 years. An early age at adiposity rebound is known to be a risk factor for later obesity.

Changing pattern of visceral leishmaniasis, United Kingdom, 1985-2004. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
A 20-year (1985-2004) retrospective review of 39 patients with imported visceral leishmaniasis found that tourism to Mediterranean countries and HIV infection were associated with visceral leishmaniasis. Diagnosis was often delayed.

The non-linear relationship between the visceral adiposity index and the risk of prediabetes and diabetes

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
BackgroundThe visceral adiposity index is a valuable tool for assessing visceral fat accumulation. However, its non-linear association with prediabetes and diabetes requires further elucidation.

Visceral adiposity influences glucose and glycogen metabolism in control and hyperlipidic-fed animals

open access: yesNutrición Hospitalaria, 2013
Introduction: Evidences suggest that fat intake, visceral obesity and intracellular lipids are related to insulin impairment. Objective: The objective of the present paper was correlate visceral obesity and metabolic alterations in control (CTR) and ...

Elevated fasting plasma ghrelin in prader-willi syndrome adults is not solely explained by their reduced visceral adiposity and insulin resistance.

open access: yes, 2004
Plasma ghrelin is elevated in Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). This might contribute to obesity or GH deficiency in such patients. Visceral adiposity and insulin resistance are reduced in PWS, which might lead to hyperghrelinemia.

Waist circumference as a determinant of hypertension and diabetes in Brazilian women: a population-based study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of central adiposity, as evaluated by the measurement of waist circumference (WC), as an independent risk factor for hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the setting of a developing country.

Association Between the Visceral Adiposity Index and Arterial Stiffness: Results of the EVasCu Study and a Meta-Analysis Including EVasCu Data and Prior Studies

open access: yesMetabolites
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between the visceral adiposity index and arterial stiffness in healthy adults via original data from the EVasCu study and to contextualize these findings through a meta-analysis of previously ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Effects of IGFBP4 deficiency on human preadipocyte proliferation and differentiation through the IGF1R/AKT pathway

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
IGFBP4 knockdown (KD) impairs preadipocyte proliferation and is associated with IGF1R protein downregulation and attenuated AKT phosphorylation. The mechanisms by which IGFBP4 KD influences the IGF1R/AKT signaling pathway involve newly synthesized proteins and lysosomal degradation pathways. Created in BioRender.
